Institutional Mandate

The IRCCS Associazione Oasi Maria SS is a no-profit private Research Institute of national significance, with the mandate to develop evidence-based biomedical research activities to assist people with various kinds and degrees of mental retardation from all country.

Main Expertise

According to the established standards of excellence, the Institute pursues its research goals, mainly clinical and translational, in the biomedical field as well as in the organization and management of health services, including hospitalization service, high-quality specialty care within the hospitals, and advanced training on specific topics (mental retardation and brain aging).

The institute is a WHO Collaborating Centre, and has been one of the fourteen partners of the EU funded POMONA I and II projects, aimed to develop and pilot a set of health indicators on people with intellectual disability.

Our experience shows that Type 2 diabetes or Obesity can be found in several genetic pathologies associated with mental retardation. For this purpose, we consider relevant the idea of creating new awareness of foods for the families of adults with mental retardation, namely, to create, primarily, a family education, and secondarily an appropriate nutrition plan with regard to children with mental retardation. Potential partner could be Research Institutions, Public Administrations responsible for services delivery, Patient’s Associations.
