"Teachers
teach because they care. Teaching young people is what they do best.
It requires long hours, patience, and care."
--Horace Mann
With my minimal amount of time in the Education field, I would have to say that this quote is best used to summarize my philosophy of education. I feel that it is so important for an educator to have a strong will to care about each and every child that crosses their path. I realize that not every child wants to be helped, but it is the responsibility of teachers to strive to try to make an impact on the life of every child that they encounter. If a person lacks that internal motive to want to help others, then I believe it will be hard for them to succeed in this field.
In my eyes, I think the most important words in this quote are those that say teaching requires long hours. Often people don’t realize how much work teachers put into their profession outside of the classroom. Their job is simply not a 9-5 job. They spend countless hours grading papers, preparing lessons, and making sure that they are constantly updated with the newest changes in the education system. Teachers also spend a lot of time working with after-school activities. I think that teachers putting in that extra time and working with students outside of the classroom setting can really have an effect on there relationship with the students. The more students can relate to teachers on a person to person basis rather than a student to teacher basis, the more I think that the students begin to respect their teachers as educators and more importantly humans.
