Bowling Back the Years!
Go for Life National Bowling Expo - 26th September 2002
Over 400 people attended the Go for Life National Bowling Expo at the end of September. Clubs and organisations from twenty six Irish counties were represented at the Expo, which took place at the Aer Lingus sports centre (ALSAA) in Santry, Dublin. London too was represented by visitors from the London Irish Elders Forum. There were eight bowling activities exhibited and participants got a chance to sample each one: ten pin bowling, bocce, petanque, road bowling, kurling, horse shoe pitching, indoor bowls and outdoor bowls.
Bowling seems to be a sport that appeals to both men and women, as both were well represented amongst participants, who were drawn from active retirement groups, senior clubs and a range of community organisations. Participants were extremely enthusiastic about the opportunity to sample so many forms of bowling. Some feedback from participants:
" Very enjoyable day, most interesting and glad to bring information to our group."
" Very enjoyable and informative day - just a taste of everything to give you an appetite for more. Very well organised."
"It was a marvellous experience - make you glad to grow old."
The Irish Minister of State at the Dept of Health and Children, Ivor Callely, TD, attended the event and participated in a number of the bowling activities in the afternoon.
The Bowlind Expo was organised by Go for Life - the Irish national programme for sport and physical activity for older people. Go for Life is an Age & Opportunity initiative, funded by the Irish Sports Council. The Bowling Expo was organised to coincide with the Global Embrace.
