Title and number of pages of the notified document: Import health standard for the importation of passerine birds into New Zealand from the United Kingdom (20 pages).

Description of content: This import health standard allows for the importation of specified passerine bird species into New Zealand from the United Kingdom. It includes the following safeguards against diseases of concern:

- Declaration of area freedom from Newcastle disease and avian influenza.

- Pre-export testing regime for paramyxovirus 1, paramyxovirus 2, paramyxovirus3, Mycoplasma iowae, Salmonella Gallinarum, Salmonella Pullorum, Salmonella Arizonae, Salmonella Enteritidis phage type 4 and Salmonella Typhimurium definitive phage type 104.

- Post-arrival quarantine period of 35 days in New Zealand with a further testing regime for paramyxovirus 1, paramyxovirus 2, paramyxovirus 3, Mycoplasma iowae, Salmonella Gallinarum, Salmonella Pullorum, Salmonella Arizonae, Salmonella Enteritidis phage type 4 and Salmonella Typhimurium definitive phage type 104.

To prevent the entry into New Zealand of exotic avian diseases such as avian influenza, Newcastle disease, paramyxovirus 2, paramyxovirus 3, Mycoplasma iowae, Salmonella Gallinarum, Salmonella Pullorum and Salmonella Arizonae.

To prevent the entry of Salmonella Enteritidis PT 4 and Salmonella Typhimurium DT 104 into the avian population of New Zealand.

Paramyxovirus 2, paramyxovirus 3, Mycoplasma iowae, Salmonella Arizonae, Salmonella Enteritidis (in passerine birds) and Salmonella Typhimurium (in passerine birds) are not covered by the OIE Code.


If an international standard, guideline or recommendation exists, give the appropriate reference and briefly identify deviations:

The Office International des Epizooties (OIE) International Animal Health Code recommends import requirements for countries free from Newcastle disease and avian influenza (e.g. United Kingdom). In addition to the requirements specified in the Code, the import health standard requires a diagnostic test for these two diseases.


The import health standard complies with recommendations in the Code for Salmonella Pullorum and Salmonella Gallinarum.
