Birmingham Schools get ready to ‘Educate and Celebrate!’

Elly Barnes, voted No: 1 on The Independent on Sunday’s Pink List of influential LGBT people will be taking her ground -breaking ‘Educate and Celebrate’ programme to Birmingham this September. Birmingham City Council, the largest in the country have appointed Ms Barnes to lead on promoting LGBT inclusivity and to challenge homophobia by taking her resources and experience into its schools. Ms Barnes is a music teacher and LGBT and diversity coordinator at Stoke Newington School, North London where she has successfully eradicated homophobia. Ms Barnes is also the Schools Rep for SchoolsOUT, the organisation that campaigns for all schools to be safe places for LGBT staff and students. She has already provided hundreds of teachers with the skills and strategies to make their own schools LGBT friendly by running 1 day courses from her school. She has also provided training to individual schools, Trade Union groups, youth groups and businesses across the country.

Stephen Hughes the Chief Executive of Birmingham City Council said:

"I am really excited that Elly has agreed to come to work in Birmingham. She is a very charismatic person with bags of energy and enthusiasm and will make a sea change to the way we tackle homophobic bullying in our schools, as well as raising awareness of the need for tolerance and understanding in such a diverse city as Birmingham"

Teachers across the country have repeatedly asked for training to challenge homophobia and promote diversity in their schools, and this move will place Ms Barnes in the Council with more schools than any other. She said ‘400 schools is a challenge! I look forward immensely to working with Birmingham teachers and LGBT professionals to make all schools LGBT friendly places'

'I am looking for 20 Birmingham teachers at any key stage to lead their school in the 'Educate and Celebrate' initiative, they will receive individual training from me, staff training in their school and full support at every step of the way'. Please get in touch [email protected]

More information about the ‘Educate and Celebrate’ training programme can be found on the SchoolsOUT website http://www.schools-out.org.uk/training.htm

Note to Editors

Schools Out has been continuously campaigning for LGBT equality in education since it was established in 1974, as the London Gay Teachers’ Group. We believe this makes us the longest running such group in the world.

In February 2004, we launched LGBT History Month, our first major project since the repeal of Section 28, to reclaim our position in the curriculum and in wider society.
