INFORMAL SUMMARIES OF SIDE EVENTS DURING THE FOURTH SESSION OF THE UNITED NATIONS PERMANENT FORUM ON INDIGENOUS ISSUES

SIDE EVENT: INTERGENERATIONAL INDIGENOUS WOMEN DIALOGUE ON MDG’S

Organized by MADRE

PURPOSE:

To review and evaluate the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) with emphasis on Goal 1: “Eradicate extreme poverty and Hunger” and Goal 2: “Achieve universal primary education” in relation to indigenous women.

VENUE and DATE:

This side event took place in the context of the fourth session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, at United Nations Headquarters, May 16, 2005.

CHALLENGES:

The panelists composed of indigenous women leaders expressed similar concerns about the implementation of the MDGs. One concern was related to property ownership rights violations. Another concern was the dependency effect indigenous peoples will have on government programs that for the most part do not integrate their cultural needs. All four panelists agreed that education, health care, and poverty programs need to be modified to fit the uniqueness of the different indigenous cultures.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

A number of recommendations were proposed by the panelists:

  1. A formal recognition of indigenous communities by governments.

  2. Implementation of programs related to the MDGs goals that are culturally sensitive to indigenous values and traditions.

  3. Indigenous women should organize and support each other in solidarity to affect public policy by participating in local governments.

  4. Intergenerational network among indigenous women to help educate, motivate, and revive future generations.

  5. Re-examining indigenous history to help educate future generations and eradicate adverse social conditions.

  6. Enforcing equal basic education for indigenous women.

PANELISTS:

The panel consisted of four indigenous women leaders from Latin America and Africa.

AUDIENCE:

Member States, United Nations agencies, funds and programmes, indigenous peoples’ organizations, non-governmental organizations and academic institutions participated.
