Science – Spacecraft Design
Due Date: Thursday August 21, 2014
You and your team of scientists have met to explore the properties of Oobleck, the substance that makes up the oceans on the planet, Ork. You then attended a scientific convention to discuss the properties of Oobleck and agree on the Laws of Oobleck, which describe when Oobleck is a solid and when it is a liquid.
The planet Ork has conditions very much like those on Earth, except the oceans are made of Oobleck and the sky is green. Up until now, spacecrafts reaching the planet Ork have hovered above the ocean’s surface and taken samples through a long probe that reaches down into the ocean. No spacecraft has been able to land on an ocean of Oobleck.
Your assignment is to design a spacecraft that is able to land on an ocean of Oobleck, explore the whole planet, and take off again. The spacecraft can be manned or unmanned. Your design must take into account the Laws of Oobleck. The most important part of the assignment is to figure out how to build the spaceship so it can land safely and take off again.
Part I: THIS CAN BE DONE ALONE OR WITH A PARTNER
Sketch your design in pencil (whisper lines), then go over the pencil with pen. Erase the original pencil marks. (this step is optional)
Use colored pencils or marker to color your design.
Label all parts.
Name your spacecraft.
Make sure your design can land and take off without getting stuck in the Oobleck.
Part II: THIS IS INDIVIDUAL – EVERYONE WRITES A PARAGRAPH
Write an explanation about how the spacecraft works (how it lands and then takes off again without getting stuck in the Oobleck). You may use a computer or handwrite – make sure it’s legible.
Have fun!!
Due Thursdasy August 21 at the start of class. Be ready to present your design.
