Instructions: This story deals with the release of Clery Act-based information as it pertains to Barton College. The Clery Act is a federal statute that requires all colleges and universities that participate in federal financial aid programs to disclose information pertaining to on-campus crime. Barton is a private college with approximately 1,200 students and is considered by most to be a safe campus. Edit the story for Associated Press style, grammar and clarity. If the editor requires additional information or questions the credibility of the material presented, make the proper notations. What information could help with the overall validity of the story? Is the purpose of the article clear in its current form? Are there additional questions that need to be addressed in the revision of the article? Rewrite passages accordingly.

Barton College is widely considered to be an very safe place to live, but this feeling of safety can lead to a complacent student body that is not looking out for itself.

In reality, Barton is technically not safer than the other campuses in Phillips County. The Clery Act data from 2011 for colleges in the Phillipsville area shows that there was one instance of alleged forcible sexual offense and two instances of alleged burglary within the Barton bubble. Phillipsville University, however, only had two instances of alleged burglary, making Phillipsville a safer campus according to the Clery Act data.

While the difference between Barton safety and Phillipsville safety in 2011 was one crime, it’s still a measurable difference and there needs to be an explanation as to why the two similar campuses in the same county are in different states of safety. The Clery Act data makes little sense Barton students because often they feel as if they are safest while on campus. “I feel safe even when walking around alone at night because I don’t feel like the men on campus would really do anything,” Sophomore Haley Hall said, “I often see Barton Police on patrol.”

Associate Director of Residence Life Billy Williams says that most crimes on campus involve crimes against property–like theft. Williams also said that Residence Life has made great strides in residence hall safety with the advent of the card swipe system on all the residences. Where all the halls used to have individual keys to locks on all outside doors that were locked after visitation hours, the card swipe system is much more convenient and safer for students and it was actually added around four years ago. “The common perception with everyone is that we’re in the Bubble, and that promotes the idea that everything is O.K. because the campus looks so ideal, but crime happens everywhere.”

Joy Aldan, a junior resident assistant said that she believes Barton is the safest place in the world. “I’ve never had an experience at Barton where I felt like I was in danger,” said Aldan. While the overwhelming majority of the student body considers Barton to be extremely safe, Aldan believes this assumption is actually why crimes occur on campus. “We do get complacent and sometimes we don’t take the proper measures to prevent something like theft.”
