Bethesda Social Chair position is STILL open!

  1. Newsletter Chair (Editor-in-Chief: Manasi Apte, Managing Editor: Melissa Fernandez)

  1. There will be two editions coming out this spring: the Spring Newsletter and a Colloquium Special Edition Newsletter.

  1. The Spring Newsletter articles are currently in review by the authors and will be submitted back to the editors on March 30th. Projected publication is Mid-May.

  1. The Colloquium Edition is currently being written up. It will contain interviews with the directors, our extramural speaker (Sara Courtneidge), and our OPGF candidates. We will also be featuring reviews of the events that took place at Colloquium March 1st. Articles are due March 30th. We understand that some articles/interviews will take longer to write up, so we are working with the writers to allow them to have the time they need to get the information for the articles.

  1. We want to remind everyone to submit any photos that they took at colloquium so we can include them in our photo collage.

  1. Also, if you plan on attending a conference or attended one this spring, consider writing a review of the conference for the Summer edition newsletter. Email me at [email protected] and I will add you to the writing team.

  1. Outreach –NCI-SC (Chair: Patty Wiley)

  1. We would like to host science nights throughout the DMV in the 2018-2019 school year. We would like to brainstorm some ideas but are also looking for additional people to assist in leading and/or planning this new part of the program.

  2. Are you interested in becoming the outreach chair next year? Chanelle Case Borden is here to answer questions about the program. Patty will likely be leaving NIH in September, but there will be a bit of overlap to ease the transition.

  3. If you are interested in the position please email Chanelle ([email protected]) with a statement of about why you would like to be a part of NCI-SC and your experience relating to organizing, planning, and managing events. Chanelle provided some details about the nature of the work and the time commitment. She would be willing to work with multiple people if there is interest. Contact Chanelle if you have questions.

  1. NPA Liaison (Liaison: Jinping Liu)

  1. As a NPA liaison, I am preparing to attend the NPA annual meeting in Cleveland, OH April 5-6 this year with a poster.

  2. The poster’s title is “Bridging Trainees to Career Development--CCR-FYI Supports NCI Young Scientists from Diverse Backgrounds”

  3. The poster’s content includes: Abstract, Background, CCR-FYI mission, CCR-FYI Colloquium and other activities, Diverse career development opportunities supported and advocated by CCT, Conclusion, CCR-FYI continuing supports and Acknowledgements. Please see the attached poster.

We briefly discussed the NPA Liaison position and mentioned some of the events we host for NPA Postdoc Appreciation Week. We may want to hold the coffee and doughnuts session in multiple locations and might want to invite other groups (PIs, staff scientists, postbacs) to incorporate even more networking into the event. We will address logistics and the rules regarding asking for funds in upcoming meetings.

  1. Felcom Representative (Representative: Manasi Apte)

  1. Graduate Student Representative(s) (Positions OPEN) Kevin may be interested.

  1. Postbac Representative(s) (Mentor: OPEN)

? Akriti did not have any luck finding shadowing opportunities in the Clinical Center, even in simulations, for postbacs because they do not have a medical degree. She is now in contact with some programs outside of the NIH and is awaiting responses.

OHS in Frederick offers CPR classes for free, one way to get exposure to that at the very least.

  1. March Postbac Brown Bag event held March 22nd in Building 549 Café. 10 Postbacs in attendance.

  2. Recently started distributing “Frederick Postbac News” email (sporadically and informally through the listserv) featuring Frederick specific/accessible upcoming events and OITE-specific activities. If you have any postbac relevant info you would like distributed, please forward it to me at [email protected].  She will send this to Ancy to include in the Wiki.

  3. I have also been getting interest from Postbacs to take over the Frederick postbac chair position for the next year.

  1. E-Communications (Chairs: Jason Su and Ancy Nalli)

  1. Events will be updated on LinkedIn as needed.

  2. Here is the updated link for the wiki: https://ccrod.cancer.gov/confluence/display/FYISteering/Home

  3. I included details of the Frederick First Fridays and Upcoming Elections. Calendar is populated with Frederick Seminar Series, PASS sessions and Steering Committee Meetings.SC members are welcome to suggest any inclusions they would like to see.

Ancy would like to start including the outreach activities on the Wiki as well.

  1. Colloquium Subcommittee (Chairs: Melissa Fernandez & Patty Wiley, Vice-Chairs: Molly Congdon & Sarwat Naz)

  1. See new business

  1. Scientific Subcommittee – Seminar Series PASS and Career Development Seminar (Chair: Sarwat Naz)

  1. All the PASS slots have been booked until April, 2018. We are moving to start the second quarter for which Scott has proposed the dates. It is going well and there is a ton of interest. We get more interested parties than we can currently accommodate (3).

  1. Final decision is pending at Jonathan’s office. I am following it with Erika Ginsberg and Earle Keyonna. Once approved emails will be sent to postdoclistserv.

FYI-SS-Frederick (Chair: Namratha Sheshadri, Co-chairs: Dipak Poria and Jason Su)

  1. The seminar on March 21st was cancelled due to the bad weather. We have rescheduled the speakers from this date to May 2nd. We are currently looking to fill one slot on April 18th for the rest of the spring series that run until June 13th. We will then break for the summer.

  1. In other updates, I did an informational interview with David Taylor who was one of the panelists for Science Administration on Day 2 of the colloquium that got cancelled. He will not be available to join us on May 11th. I will write this up for the quarterly newsletter.

  1. Bylaws Subcommittee (Chair: Snehal Gaikwad)

No updates at this time. Melissa will review the bylaws updates before May 11th.

  1. Unfinished Business

Still looking for people to fill the following positions:

              1. Bethesda Social Chair Can support existing events offered by OITE and VFC instead of planning all events from scratch.

              2. Graduate Student Representative

  1. New Business

  1. Annual Retreat:

    1. Date and location changed to May 11th, Bethesda Campus, MD. The Cloisters (Building 60)

    2. Since the colloquium was cancelled on March 2nd, a retreat committee was formed to plan an expanded version of the retreat. Typically the retreat is a closed event for the SC and planning committee only. This year we will have a closed session in the morning with the typical colloquium survey review, election results announcements, and Colloquium SOP update voting.

    3. The afternoon, “Open” session will tentatively feature a Scientific Admin Panel, Presentations by the OPGF candidates, the Mentoring Up workshop by Phil Ryan, Scott Morgan’s Career Fair Prep Workshop, and a town hall with the CCR directors (Bill, Glenn, Jonathan). There will be a social networking afterwards on the Bethesda area.

    4. An official schedule will be circulated in the coming weeks to both the CCR-FYI and the CCR community.

    5. Special thanks to Nicole & Jonathan, Nk, Molly, Namratha, Ancy, and Amelie for helping me out immensely with planning this event last minute. This would not be possible with everyone’s help. Anyone interested in joining to help out on the day of can email me at [email protected]

Remember that elections are coming up. We will be looking for co-chairs on the Frederick and Bethesda campuses, a secretary, and colloquium vice-chairs (will shadow the 2019 colloquium chairs, Molly and Naz, and become the chairs for 2020).

  1. Adjournment

The next steering committee meeting will be held on Thursday, April 26th, 2018, 11.00 AM.
