Building specialised corpora from the web

Building specialised corpora from the web

In this workshop I shall briefly introduce basic issues in specialised (manual) corpus construction from the web (i.e. search strategies, selection criteria, text formats, subcorpora). Participants will have a chance to construct a tiny specialised corpus in this way (either monolingual or bilingual comparable depending on their interests), before moving on to see how the process can be streamlined using the BootCaT toolkit, a tool specifically designed to assist translators and students of translation in the construction of quick-and-dirty specialised corpora from the web for specific tasks.

The BootCaT method was developed with the aim of helping translators to construct topic-specific corpora (i.e. corpora dealing with the same subject matter as the text to be translated), of great relevance e.g. for term extraction. However, in order to produce appropriate target texts, technical translators also need genre-specific corpora, i.e. collections of texts belonging to the same genre as the text to be translated. These are indespensable for checking phraseology and text conventions within a specific discourse community. Searching for genre specimens on the web is however a very complex task. Participants will be encouraged to experiment with different search strategies and search parameters, so as to orient the resulting corpora more towards a specific topic or a specific genre. Some attention will be devoted to the evaluation of the resulting corpora in terms of their quality, comparability, and appropriateness for a specific purpose/task.
