The Mouse in my Heart



Directions for making the song card: Cut out the small and large pictures of the mouse, bunny, fish, and heart on the next page. Laminate (or contact paper) them and velcro only the small pictures of each onto the left side of the song card over the appropriate name. Use the larger pictures as described in the last paragraph below.


This song card activity helps to reinforce steady beat, phrasing, and left to right tracking. It also helps children develop handwriting skills. Help the children use the mouse cut-out to touch each dot on the strong beat as they sing the words of the first phrase, ending on the pink heart at the right (on the word “heart”). Start back at the first dot for each phrase, obviously helping to reinforce left to right tracking. On verse two, do the same with the bunny, except the bunny “hops” on the “humps” (scallops), again ending at the heart at the right at the end of the phrase. On verse three, the fish follows the “loops” to reach the heart. On verse four, the heart cut-out touches the six small hearts on each beat to get to the larger heart at the end of the phrase.


Before having the children use the song card, draw a larger version of the phrase markings (dots, scallops, loops, and hearts) on a dry-erase board, chalkboard, etc. and have the children use the large cut-outs to follow the markings.
