Dear Parents/Guardians,
As we begin another new school year, our children are once again in close proximity to each other. In an effort to prevent the spread of contagious and communicable diseases, I will be reviewing with all students, good hand washing procedures, how to prevent the spread of disease, and when a student should be staying home from school because they are sick. I would like to update you on what your student(s) will learn in this session.
First of all, the criteria that a student is sick enough to stay home from school includes any one of the following:
1) A temperature of 100º in the last 24 hours,
2) Any episode of vomiting or diarrhea in the last 24 hours,
3) A rash that is associated with a fever or itching,
4) A consistent, runny nose,
5) A continual, moist cough,
6) A sore throat accompanied by fever or swollen neck glands, or
7) A student who is unusually tired, listless, pale, irritable, confused or lacks their normal appetite.
If your child exhibits any of these symptoms, you should keep them home from school until they are symptom free for a minimum of 24 hours with out the use of medicine. If they get sick with any of these symptoms at school, we will notify you to come pick them up. It is important for sick students to be home where they may rest and recuperate. It is also important that sick students not be at school where they may spread their illness to other students and staff. Please consider having a reliable adult alternate it you are unable to leave work or school to pick up your child. Unfortunately, due to lack of space and our ability to isolate children in the health room, we are unable to keep a sick child in the office area for an extended period of time.
As a method of preventing the spread of communicable diseases such as colds, flu, pink eye, cold sores or head lice we discussed not sharing:
things that go in or on your mouth such as toothbrushes, pop cans, straws, lip stick or gloss, chapstick, silverware, cups or glasses;
things that go in or on your eyes such as mascara, eye make-up, contacts, glasses, contact solution, eye drops; and
things that go on your head or in your hair such as combs, brushes, hats, helmets.
Finally, and most importantly, we reviewed the proper method of hand washing and the appropriate times that hands should be washed – after using the bathroom, before eating or touching food, after coughing or sneezing into your hands, after playing outside, after touching an animal and after touching anything that is wet. The recommendation from the Center for Disease Control is that when a student needs to cough or sneeze they should bend their arm and sneeze or cough into the crook of their arm. This prevents the germs from being spread via the air or in hand to hand contact.
I appreciate your assistance in reinforcing these lessons at home and helping us to maintain a healthy environment for all students and staff in the Liberty School District. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me at school.
Sincerely,
Sarah Beyersdorf, RN
