The gift bearers bring the offerings of the community to the altar. This represents the community’s sacrifice given to God during the celebration of the Eucharist. This is usually the bread and the wine used for consecration, but at times other items if may be brought up deemed appropriate.

At the “General Intercessions – Prayers of the Faithful” please make your way to the offertory table. Once there, please pick up the items you are to bring to the altar.

Altar Servers – The altar servers prepare the altar. After the General Intercession, from the credence table, the altar servers bring the presider’s chalice and Sacramentary to the altar. The head altar server sets the chalice by laying out the corporal, paten, and purificator. The assistant places the Sacramentary on the altar. When this is completed, they step away from the altar, bow and return to their chairs.

Other Gifts – If there are other gifts to be brought to the altar, they should be brought up before the bread and wine. These should be brought up in a dignified manner – ie. A basket, after the presider has reached the altar.

Bread and Wine – After the priest has reaches the altar, or after other gifts have been brought to the altar, the gifts of bread and wine should be brought to the altar. When this is completed, step away from the altar, bow, turn and return to your chair.

Altar Servers – Following the gift bearers, the altar service return to the altar one with a small cruet of water, the other with a small cruet (pitcher), lavabo bowl, and lavabo towel. The priest will turn and take the small cruet of water and put a drop in the wine. He will pray, then turn and wash his hands. When complete, the altar servers return to their chairs.
