THE VIRGIN AND THE CHILD ON THE THRONE

The original dates from the first part of the 15^th century.

The Godmother is depicted sitting on the throne embracing Jesus Christ. With her right hand she holds his shoulder and with her left his foot. Jesus Christ blesses with his right hand (benedicto greaca). His forefinger is pointed upwards, his middle finger finger and his little finger are somewhat bent and his “ring finger” meets his thumb.

His hand is turned towards the Gospel Scroll in his left hand. His finger positions depict the name of Jesus Christ - ICXC ; his forefinger signifies I, the bent middle finger signifies C, the meeting of the “ring finger” and the thumb signify X and the little finger signifies C.

Here the two upper fingers symbolize both the divine and the human nature of Jesus Christ while the other three brought together symbolize the Holy Trinity.

The bent finger symbolizes the incarnation.

Thus of portrays we are able to see the ancient believers’ predecessor (protopop) Avvakum (1621 – 1682) announcing the blessing.

In his left hand Jesus Christ holds a Gospel Scroll.

Gudsmoder framställs sittande på tronen, hon håller Kristus i famn. Med den höger hand håller hon honom i axel och med vänster hans fot. Kristus välsignar med höger hand, (benedictio greaca) pekfingret är rakt uppåtriktat, långfingret och lillfingret är lätt böjda och ringfingret möter tummen. Handen är vänd mot Evangelierullen i vänstra handen. Fingerställningar tecknar Kristi namn IC XC ;pekfingret betecknar I, det böjda långfingret betecknar C, ringfingret och tummen som möts X samt det böjda lillfingret C. Här symboliserar de två övre fingrarna Kristi godomliga och mänskliga natur, medan de tre sammanförda symboliserar Treenigheten. Det böjda fingret symboliserar inkarnationen. Så kan man på porträtt se de gammaltroendes företrädare protopop Avvakum (1621 – 1682) meddela välsignelsen. I sin vänstra hand håller Kristus en Evangelierulle.
