COURSE DESCRIPTION: WORLD HISTORY: 1500 TO PRESENT, HONORS (230014)

Grade: 9 Credit: 1.0 Prerequisite(s): None

This course is the concluding year-long study in the sequence of World History for students in Alabama’s schools. Instruction in this course builds on the knowledge and skills that students have acquired in their previous studies in history and geography. The course is organized chronologically with content topics that focus on critical issues in history during recent times. Students study and analyze global issues regarding politics, economics, society, and the environment. This course is designed to emphasize writing, research, and critical thinking skills necessary to prepare students for future Advanced Placement History courses. This is a challenging CONTENT course that will include intellectual-cultural, political-diplomatic, and social-economic history. This course is weighted 5 points on a 100-point scale.

COURSE OBJECTIVE: The objective of this content-based course is to become more knowledgeable of World History and Geography with emphasis on developing learning skills, research skills, and self-discipline. To be successful in this class, students must be able to perform the following tasks and demonstrate the following skills at grade level or higher.

ATTENDANCE: Regular attendance is very important to successful completion of this course. On the A/B Block Schedule missing one class is the equivalent of two days’ instruction time. Students who miss class often will quickly jeopardize chances for good grades. Students should make a sincere commitment to be in class. All Huntsville City School Board policies, school policies, and classroom rules will be followed. (Consult student handbook.) Attendance will be taken daily as students complete the bell ringer; therefore, students should be seated with a sharpened pencil and working when the bell rings.

PARENT-TEACHER CONTACT: Parents and/or guardians should check INOW regularly to track grades and averages. Parents and/or guardians are welcomed and encouraged to communicate with me via email. I check my email multiple times per day, and will make every effort to return messages the same day I receive them. Parent conferences may be arranged during the school year before school. Please call the office to arrange a time, or contact Coach Barnes via email: [email protected]

GRADING POLICY: There will be a variety of assessment methods used including tests, quizzes, class and group activities, individual assignments, etc. Papers may be graded for following instructions, effort, accuracy, or a combination of these factors. Grades will be based on a point system based on difficulty level, length, and content. In-Class Assignments are worth 40% of the Nine Weeks’ Average, and Summative Assessments are worth 60%. Students may expect to complete about one In-Class Assignment for every day we meet. We will cover the material by chapter, and for each chapter students will take one Unit Test. Depending on the length of the material, students will take a Unit Test about every other week. Grades will be entered into INOW as quickly as possible. I DO NOT LOSE PAPERS. If a student receives a score of “1” in INOW, either the student did not turn in the assignment OR the student did not write his/her name at the top. Please check the “No Name” drawer on the counter. Students may turn in one no name paper and will not be penalized; after that it is counted as a late grade.

CANVAS: Students will be required to join Canvas. Students will receive a special code or email invitation for their specific period. This website will be used to communicate special study sessions, important news for students, and assignment deadlines. Students will also turn in assignments and projects through Canvas.

MAKE-UP WORK: It is the STUDENT’S responsibility to check for missed assignments on your first day back from an excused absence. Valid excuses include those in the Student Handbook (i.e., sickness with a doctor’s excuse, death in the immediate family, etc.) If for some reason an assignment cannot be made up (for example, a group assignment), an alternative assignment will be provided.

1 day late = 80% 2 days late = 70% 3 days late = 60% 4 days late = 50%

5 days late = 45% 6 days late = 40% 7 days late = 35% 8 days = 30%
