JOB TITLE: Exhibitions Assistant - 2 days per week
SALARY: £24,861 - £27,937 pro-rata
LOCATION: Inverness Museum & Art Gallery
HOMEWORKING: This post is not suitable for homeworking
RESPONSIBLE TO: Exhibitions Officer
JOB PURPOSE: To assist the Exhibitions Officer in the curation and delivery of the temporary touring Exhibitions Programme to High Life Highland art galleries and specifically in developing the social media and educational aspects of the programme. Exhibitions are either curated in-house, curated in partnership with other organisations or sourced and hired from other organisations to cater to a variety of interests. The post-holder will concentrate particularly on the education, community engagement and the marketing and interpretation of the exhibitions. The post holder would also assist in co-ordinating the Visual Arts and Craft Makers Award scheme in partnership with Creative Scotland.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Art Transportation
Moving exhibitions – duties include driving a van – usually a Luton - and couriering high-value works of art between the Highland galleries and outwith the Highlands to the Central Belt and further afield ensuring their safety and security.
Art-handling – loading and unloading vans appropriately to ensure safety and security of artworks, minimising risk; condition checking of artworks on arrival and departure of exhibitions and completing condition reports.
Exhibition Installation and de-installation
planning, hanging and dismantling exhibitions at Inverness Museum & Art Gallery, the Thurso Gallery and the North Coast Visitor Centre
installing artworks, identifying fittings, fixings and display equipment appropriate to the artwork and level of security
Curation
curating in-house exhibitions as part of a small creative team including developing exhibition plans and budgets and commissioning artists.
curating and developing a varied exhibition programme as part of the team including researching and sourcing suitable exhibitions to hire.
networking to create partnerships and identify new exhibition and funding opportunities
Education, Events and Activities
developing the exhibitions education programme including liaison with local schools and colleges, e.g. UHI
researching, developing and leading school tours, hands-on workshops and drop-in sessions, including online
devising a programme of events relating to exhibitions to engage different audiences, including taking account of the potential for the health and well-being agenda
co-ordinating with other HLH staff and museum curators on joint projects
Marketing and print
designing posters and other exhibition marketing material either in-house or in collaboration with lenders and funders;
developing and designing exhibition interpretation material including digital
preparing material for press releases, e-marketing and mailchimp
developing social media presence
organising off –site activities ( e.g XPO North, NGS)
General
General office admin , processing paperwork, aritsts’ agreements, Visual Artists and Makers Awards etc
Documenting and gathering material for project monitoring and evaluation for exhibitions with external funding
Gallery attendant support, meetings and minutes
Services required are variable, currently 2 days per week and 5 days during exhibition changeover weeks. The nature of the work necessitates a degree of flexibility in working hours, evening and weekend working particularly for private views, exhibition opening days and hospitality events

EXPERIENCE
Experience of working in an arts organisation
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
Educated to degree level in an arts-related subject
SKILLS/ATTRIBUTES GENERAL
Computer skills; ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team; good degree of physical fitness as some lifting is required
SKILLS/ABILITIES SPECIFIC TO THE POST
A good knowledge of contemporary art and artists; art-handling skills (desirable although training will be given); design and presentation skills; ability to work with basic computer design software and social media
INTERPERSONAL AND SOCIAL SKILLS
Good communication skills for dealing with clients within and outwith the organisation, including partners, colleagues, school parties, general public - children and adults
