Speech by French Ambassador

Jacques CHAMPAGNE de LABRIOLLE

Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is my pleasure to welcome you all tonight, here at the Hilton hotel, only a fortnight after another concert here in the same hotel, by the classical Quintet ‘’Le concert impromptu’’,

And only a few days after a momentous development in the French-Nigerian relations, we are very glad to welcome renowned guitar player Thibault Cauvin.

Thibault Cauvin is presently on a tour in Ethiopia and Nigeria. He performed last week in Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa, and he played last Saturday at the new Alliance Française in Port Harcourt.

Thibault Cauvin is certainly one of the most talented and sought-after guitarists today.

He was born in a family of musicians, and began learning the guitar with his father at the age of 6. He soon graduated from the Conservatoire de Bordeaux and from the Conservatoire de Paris, and then embarked on the international competitions circuit.

At the age of 20, he was the first and only guitarist worldwide ever to win 13 international first prizes.

He is now travelling the world, with his guitar in his hand, throughout the year, at the invitation of the most prestigious festivals and concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Shanghai Opera House, the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, London's Wigmore Hall , The Hong Kong Opera , the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris, among others.

He has already given more than a thousand concerts, in over 120 countries.
He has also participated in many TV and radio programs, and played with many famous musicians, composers and symphony orchestras.

Besides his training in classical music in the conservatoires, Thibault Cauvin also has a background in contemporary music, from family influences. He also has the very special experience of a full decade of a kind of ‘’never ending tour’’ all over the world. This has shaped a unique musical personality and a very special sense of creativity.

Thibault has already released five records so far, the last of which is a recording of pieces by Napolitan Eighteen Century composer Domenico Scarlatti. As you are aware I am sure, Scarlatti was a harpsichord composer and virtuoso. I’ll say that the pieces were originally written by Scarlatti, and later rearranged by Thibault Cauvin.

You will soon realize what I mean when Thibault Cauvin will play Scarlatti, or may be rather ‘’Dance with Scarlatti’’, to quote the title of his last album, which was for three months into the classical top ten.

Besides revisiting some Baroque Hits of the Eighteenth Century, Thibault will also play for you a few jazz standards, and some pieces that he collected during his many trips around the world.

Ladies and Gentlemen, now please welcome Thibault Cauvin !
