2. New Introductions

Everyone introduced him or herself. Wendy Dutton introduced herself as an employee of Highland Hospital Domestic Violence Program and Sexual Assault Center for over 25 years. Danielle Ancin introduced herself as Niroga’s Program manager & Senior Trainer.

3. Wendy Dutton: Rape Crisis Center

Ms. Dutton gave an immense overview of the process sexual assault victims go through when admitted to Highland Hospital, and her role in the process as an advocate. Mz. Dutton explained that Highland Hospital Domestic Violence Program and Sexual Assault Center provides services to sexually abused clients 14 years and older as well as services to victims of domestic violence. Services include advocacy, counseling and medical support as well as the 24-hour crisis line:(510) 534-9290. She explained that in 1985 Santa Cruz County District Attorney Arthur Danner consulted with the local rape crisis center and formed a task force based on San Luis Hospital’s model and a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program in Houston, Texas. The models were combined to form the first SART in California. The SART Listserv supports the safety, justice and autonomy of all victims and survivors of sexual violence; works to meet the needs of underserved/marginalized service providers in the development of SARTs; and creates a forum to enhance the response to systems advocacy and sexual violence prevention initiatives among sexual assault response teams. Ms. Dutton explained step by step the process a sexual assault victims goes through when admitted through Highland Hospital Emergency room (ER).

  1. According to California law Title 17 requires that all victims of sexual assault have a right to an advocate and support person, before providing a statement to police.

  2. The advocate provides fundamental support to the victim during the statement process to police.

  3. The victim then undergoes a physical examination to collect evidence. The advocate is also there for support. This option is voluntary, and if the victim decides to opt out of the examination the victim still has a case.

  4. The next step is crisis intervention. This phase provides the victim with stress management resources and tips, in hopes that the victim can be free from trauma, stress, anxiety, PTSD, etc. The advocate explains the legal system to them, and every option they have and the consequences.

  5. Next, the advocate checks on the victim’s status after 72 hours, to make sure they are mentally, physically, and emotionally healthy.

Mz. Dutton gave recognition to the wonderful performance by Lady Gaga at the 2016 Oscars, where she song “ Til it Happens to You”. Lady Gaga co-wrote and recorded to accompany this year’s powerful campus-rape documentary The Hunting Ground. Also best Picture Spotlight is famously the true story of journalists covering the cover-up of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church.

4. Niroga workshop on mindfulness

The Peralta healthcare team had the great opportunity to relax and receive mindfulness training from Danielle Ancin, Niroga’s program manager and senor trainer. Mz. Ancin provided the team with a 15-minute transformative life/leadership skill (TLS) protocol sheet, and mindfulness skills to utilize on a daily basis. Mz. Ancin provided everyone with a sheet that allowed them to rate themselves on a scale from 1-10 on how stressed, distracted, and calm they were. She then asked for everyone to add the numbers together. Mz. Ancin asked that everyone sit in a comfortable position, with his or her feet grounded, and with his or her eyes closed. Mz. Ancins’ soothing voice lead the group into a 5- minute meditation that was completed by her ringing a Tibetan singing bowl, and everyone looking up when they were ready. After completing the meditation, everyone was asked to re-score himself or herself on a scale from 1-10 on how stressed, distracted , and calm they were after relaxation. Everyone agreed that they were a lot more relaxed after the guided meditation. Mr. Wise stated that he totally forgot about the pain from his twisted shoulder!

Mz. Ancin explained that at the Niroga Institute they practice dynamic mindfulness, which combines breath with movement while being mindful. She asked everyone to get into a group of three to discuss the stressors in our daily lives. Mz. Ancin reminded everyone that stressors are apart of daily life, and many times is out of our control. But, what we do have control over is how to manage those stressors. On a daily basis, you have to deal with traffic, parenting, or global news, and that is all apart of the environment. Mz. Ancin asked how does sitting in traffic affect your brain. Sitting in traffic can cause one to feel frustrated. That sense of frustration has evoked a behavior due to the environment. So, our stressors are a continuous cycle unless one learns to become aware of one feelings and being mindful. Mz. Ancin lead the group through some mindfulness exercises that can be used when one is under chronic stress.

Mz. Ancin explained how the brain responds under chronic stress.

  1. Attention control (attention span goes down)

  2. Emotion regulation (goes down)

  3. Coping (goes down)

  4. Empathy (goes down)

Everyone to practice at least once a day + report back!

5. Visioning and conceptual framework

Mz. Thadani provided everyone with a copy of the conceptual model for Peralta Wellness: Improved wellness + Academic Success Draft for Student health services. Mz. Thadani provided everyone with a basic overview of the model. The model incorporates Community Partners, which are hired as independent contactors to provide service for family planning, urgent care, immunizations, etc. The Peralta Wellness Care component of the model integrates doing outreach, providing First Aid, mental health counseling, health assessment, and workshop. The Peralta Academic Programs includes the PE department, education, nutrition, etc. But, overall Peralta health services provides: safety, health education, marketing, mental health counseling, community health, and the etc. The Peralta Wellness gets a glimpse of students, staff, and employees needs by doing needs assessment. Needs assessment allows for student health services to address the needs and concerns of every student staff/faculty. The funds for the Peralta Wellness comes mostly from the student health fee, Fund 1, and occasionally grants. The funds are used to pay for the salary of the director, clerical staff, nurse and some continuous mental health. Policy development is implemented to assure that policy’s are in place to protect the health, and wellbeing of students. For example, a policy was created for designated smoking areas. Curriculum development occurs in health courses which develops the financial wellness, stress management, and weight management, which are known stressors of Peralta students as shown in the needs assessments.

Mz. Thadani will follow-up to motion for an approval for the framework.

6. Medicat

Mz. Thadani reported that all health personnel will have access to Medicat in the next coming weeks. The reason for the delay is that the PCCD needs to create a demographic file, and the program is not available until that is complete. Mz. Thadani advised everyone that she would provide usernames and passwords soon.

7. Wellness Fairs

Dr. Murphy shared that Merritt College Wellness fair will take place on April 26, 2016, and the medical assistant students will be providing health screening. Mr. Schloss stated that College of Alameda wellness fair would take place on Wednesday, March 13, 2016 from 11:30-1:30. He invited everyone Mz. Moriarty stated that Laney College wellness fair will take place on April 21,2016 from 11-1p.m.

Mz. Moriarty, Mz. Crawford, Dr. Murphy, and Mr. Schloss will report back on the status of the wellness fair.

8. Sexual Assault: Not Anymore

Mz. Thadani stated that the Peralta Community College District sent out the notification letters for “Not Anymore” to students this week. Mz. Thadani reminded everyone that during class presentations and outreach that as health professionals we highly recommend getting educated about sexual assault.

Mz. Thadani will report back in the next meeting on the status of “Not Anymore”.

9. Chart Reviews

Mz. McCombs provided everyone with the process of how to do a chart review. A chart review allows for quality assurance of patient files, and to make sure the medical assistant and nurse practitioner are recording all vital information needed. Mz. McComb provided everyone with the form Mz. T created. There are sections that addresses nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management, and smoking + other drug education, as these are our SLO’s areas.

Twice a month Mz. McComb randomly chooses 5 charts to review. For every chart review she provides the students initials and the date of the chart review. Next, she makes sure the chart has a signed confidentiality & informed consent form. Next, she moves on to see if the nurse recorded did an assessment of the student, intervention, evaluation, allergies, etc. Mz. T also does these chart review for Merritt College, so they are good.
