This was the site where Lucy Webb Hayes was born. She was later to become First Lady, when her husband Rutherford B. Hayes was elected President of the United States. Lucy was in her own right important. She was the first presidential wife to graduate college, she was an important abolitionist and she was an outspoken figure in the temperance movement Her leadership on these efforts marks an important shift in the political and cultural roles of women in the United States during the mid-1800s.
