REQUIREMENTS FOR ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP


The following information must be filed with the Registrar of the Board of Ordained Ministry before the Board can consider your request for an interview for Associate Membership, and its subsequent recommendation to the Clergy Session of the Annual Conference. All paragraph references are to The Book of Discipline, 2016, ¶322.


ALL MATERIALS MUST BE IN YOUR FILE by the due dates shown below. Retain a copy of everything you submit to the Board. Computer generated forms are acceptable but must contain all information required.


From District Superintendent Be sure your District Superintendent submits annual

Annually: by March 1 evaluations of your service for Board review.


From Clergy Mentor

Annually: by December 10 Meet regularly with your Clergy Mentor. Be sure that

the annual report is submitted to the registrar.

1. The Interview Information and Request Form Form 100A


2. Undergraduate Requirements [¶322.1(4)]

Your college transcript indicating completion of “a minimum of sixty (60)

semester hours toward the Bachelor of Arts or an equivalent degree in a

college or university listed by the University Senate. Transcripts must be

mailed directly from the college to the Registrar. Transcripts mailed from

the student are not acceptable. (Note: Your undergraduate degree must

be from an institution recognized by the University Senate. An accreditation

is not necessarily equivalent.)

4. Autobiographical Statement with digital photograph (send by email to registrar) Form 120A

In duplicate, include with the form: age, health, family status, Christian

experience, call to ministry, educational record, formative Christian

experiences and plans for service in the church.


5. Medical Report Form Form 103A

The Medical Report Form must be returned by your physician directly

to the Registrar. This is at your expense. Laboratory tests are required

ONLY if indicated by your physician.


7. District Committee on Ministry Verification & Recommendation (¶322.1) Form 140A

Record of your (1) Certified Candidacy, (2) four (4) years of service as a full-

time local pastor (or equivalanet), (3) completion of the five year Course of Study and (4)

dCOM recommendation. The registrar must receive written verification of

the District Committee’s recommendation based on a three-fourths majority

vote before the interview with the Board can proceed.


8. Verification of Psychological Report, Clearances and Credit Check Information Form 130A

9. Written Doctrinal Examination [¶322.1(9)] Form 140A

Written answers to the questions found in ¶322.1 (9) formatted as requested. This is the most time consuming requirement, so do not delay working on your responses. (Although there is NO requirement for length of answers, most persons use between 1.5 and 3 pages per answer. The Board expectation is that inclusive language be used in both written and oral communication, in accordance with denominational standards.)


10. Sermon and worship service – manuscript, bulletin and video [322.1(9)]

Submit a sermon and worship service on DVD (10 copies of DVD) along with the manuscript (1) and bulletin (10) from one of the attached lectionary readings (see attached list). EMAIL one copy of the sermon manuscript. CHOOSE ANY OF THE LECTIONARY READINGS FOR THE CURRENT YEAR BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 1 AND CHRIST THE KING SUNDAY.


11. Bible Study Outline

Submitted a plan and outline for teaching a book or books of the Bible including goals and objectives of the study and outline of the content. This is to be a study that you have led.

Specifically the Board requires the following:

a. Present a statement as to what is the purpose and goal for the Bible study and how it reflects a connection between the selected book of the Bible and the Christian life.

b. Provide an outline of the scripture text and an overall teaching plan.

c. File the curriculum (lesson plan) for one 60-90 minute Bible Study session (i.e. methodology, media presentation, background information, questions, discussion points, etc.) for how you would teach one particular session.

Mail one hard copy of everything, and email one copy of everything.

12. Site Visits

You will be contacted by the Board of Ordained Ministry to schedule an on-site visit which will include your District Superintendent, 3-4 members of the Board, and the leadership of your congregation(s). This replaces the written lay evaluations that we have used in the past. It should be viewed as a time to share your ministry context with a small portion of the Board and celebrate those things that are going well.


About your interview with the Board: You must be present for the scheduled interviews. A Board recommendation is required for your candidacy to be considered by the Annual Conference. Your experience as a local pastor, the materials in your file and some hypothetical pastoral situations will form the basis for your interview


Interview Dates and Location: Interviews for associate membership and full membership will be held on March 20-21 at Jumonville.
