Vista Grande High School’s (VGHS) Marine Corps JROTC program strives to embody the school’s vision and mission Statement: VISION - All Living the Pursuit of Excellence for Lifetime Achievement. MISSION - To inspire excellence by providing globally competitive educational and career opportunities for all...

The Marine Corps JROTC is an immersive performance and project based learning experience with a curriculum which covers a wide variety of diverse learning opportunities, to include: leadership, followership, marksmanship, physical fitness, land navigation/mountaineering, public speaking, military history (national and world), first aid, close order drill, drug and alcohol awareness, 21st Century Skills, college and career exploration, and problem solving. The program is not a military recruitment initiative. The objective of the JROTC program is to educate young adults toward informed and responsible citizenship, develop leadership skills, strengthen character, and promote an understanding of the basic elements of patriotism. Additional immersive training and instruction are designed to assist students with the development of self-discipline, confidence, and integrity. Every year the program strives to expose students to cadet leadership courses by traveling to various local and national institutions for hands-on and learn-by-doing.

MCJROTC is a Leadership Education (LE) program sponsored by the United States Marine Corps in conjunction with the Casa Grande Unified High School District and Vista Grande high school. The program of instruction is accredited and provides cadets with several credits for graduation pathway requirements. Each level of the program encompasses a full school year and cadets receive .05 physical education (PE) and health credits for each successful, completed semester. Students are required to enroll in MCJROTC at the beginning of the school year, with the exception of those students that transfer from other schools with JROTC programs. Cadets who refuse to comply with school or Marine Corps JROTC policy and handbook guidelines can be disenrolled from the program at any time.

The objectives of the MCJROTC program are:

1. Develop informed and responsible citizens.

2. Develop leadership skills.

3. Strengthen character.

4. Promote an understanding of the basic elements and requirements of patriotism.

5. Form habits of self-discipline.

6. Develop respect for and an understanding of the need for constituted authority in a democratic society.

The goal of the instructors is to develop in each cadet the attributes of good citizenship and patriotism, self-confidence, self-discipline, self-reliance, self-respect, respect for others, courtesy, dependability, responsibility, loyalty, motivation, professionalism, pride, and esprit de corps. Although the United States Marine Corps sponsors the program, it is not training in preparation for military service. Rather, cadets are taught useful life skills which facilitate academic and personal success.

Cadets are issued uniforms and accessories at no expense to parents or students. Cadets are responsible for wear and care of the uniforms and will be charged replacement costs for damaged, lost, or stolen items. The cost of replacement uniforms and accessories is available upon request. Cadets are required to wear the uniform every Thursday or Friday, depending on individual daily schedules. Physical training (PT) and wear of the corresponding uniform is on Wednesday.

Exhibiting pride is a learning objective for MCJROTC cadets. To accomplish this, instructors conduct graded uniform inspections in which cadets are evaluated on proper wear of the uniform and adherence to grooming and hygiene standards. Specifics concerning uniforms and grooming are available in the cadet handbook.

Cadets receive grades for wearing both the military and physical training uniforms. Failure to wear the military uniform on prescribed days, unless given prior approval by instructors, will result in a 0" grade for the assignment. Cadets who fail to wear the PT uniform, but participate in PT exercises, will receive partial, participation credit. When absent on assigned uniform days, cadets must wear the designated uniform to school within a reasonable amount of time, not to exceed 5 days, in order to make-up the "0" grade. Cadets are required to participate in all class activities. For ill or injured cadets to be exempted from Drill or PT instructional activities, they must bring a signed, excusal note from a parent/guardian. Non-exempt cadets receive a “0” grade for lack of class participation. Absent cadets are responsible for arrangement and remediation of any missed work. Cadets must complete any missed assignments within a reasonable amount of time, not to exceed 5 days. Failure to make up work after a reasonable amount of time will result in a grade of “0”.
