Welcome to Cotham School and the AS level Dance course.
Your course teachers will be Miss Berry and Ms Phillips both of whom trained professionally as dancers as well as teachers
Course overview
AS Dance has two compulsory units that must be completed:
Unit 1: Understanding Dance- May
Written paper: 1 hour 30 minutes
45% of AS, 20% of full A level
This unit comprises of two sections, A and B. Section A is two structured questions and section B two essay style questions, both will be set on the dancer as a performer, the process and craft of choreography and the significance of dances.
Subject Content for Unit 1
The dancer in action: knowledge and understanding of the demands made in practice and performance on the dancer. This includes correct alignment, posture, joints, fitness, technical and performance skills, interpreting and communicating the dance idea, performing with others & safe practice.
The process and craft of choreography: constituent features of dance, developing ideas, structuring material, rehearsal process, the value of a choreographic journal.
The significance of dances: analysing the dance in terms of character, qualities, type and treatment of subject matter, meaning/interpretation, and clarity of choreographic intention.

Unit 2: Choreography and Performance- March
Practical coursework
55% of AS, 30% of full A level
Section A- solo choreography and performance (60 marks)
Choreograph and perform a 2-3 minute solo answering a set question
Section B- performance in duo/trio (30 marks)
Performance skills will be assessed within a 3-4 minute performance
This will be choreographed by you and your teachers
Subject Content for Unit 2
The process of solo choreography from investigation and research of ideas through to outcome
Physical and interpretative skills in relation to performance of the solo choreography
Performance skills within a duo/trio performance context.
For every lesson you will need:
To arrive on time- punctuality and attendance are hugely important to your development on the course
Appropriate clothing- fitted top and dance or jogging trousers, bare feet, no jewellery and hair tied back
An A4 file with dividers with your work/ homework & research
A notebook to keep on-going notes from lessons
Practical and written homework will be set each lesson and you are expected to spend up to 2 hours per week completing it.
It is expected that every student is punctual and equipped for every lesson. Lessons will be a mix of practical and written work, which are both essential to your success on the course- it is not just about being physical! AS dance will be very hard work, and will require real commitment from every student. We will need you to develop as independent learners, researching as much as you can to support your understanding so self-discipline is an essential requirement.
Having said that, it is an exciting and hugely rewarding course and we are here to support you as much as we can- enjoy!
