Dear Scholarship Applicant:
Thank you for your interest in applying for a Girls Incorporated® of Fort Smith scholarship! Since 1980, Girls Inc. has awarded over $250,000 to help girls reach their educational goals. Last year, 9 local scholarships were awarded, totaling over $9,500, proving that working hard and being strong, smart and bold pays off!
Please read the attached guidelines and complete the application carefully. The scholarship committee has requested that applications be typed. If you would prefer, you can receive the application in Microsoft Word format by e-mail or you can pick up a CD containing the application at 1415 Old Greenwood Road. Missing application elements will disqualify you from the scholarship consideration. Applications are due back by April 26, 2013. Applications received after this date will not be accepted for consideration.

Girls Inc. of Fort Smith is proud to offer scholarships to girls who have attended and/or given their time to our local organization. Our scholarships are available due to the generous support of Jim & June Alexander, Dr. William C. Holmes, Roger E. & Charlene Curtis Memorial Fund, ABF Do-Gooders & ABF Matching Fund and other supporters to the fund annually.
The scholarship dollars awarded range from year to year as well as the number of scholarships awarded.
Award Criteria:
An applicant must have been a member of, or have given service to Girls Incorporated® of Fort Smith for a minimum of two years (24 full months).
Arkansas residency is not required.
At minimum, applicants must be a senior in high school; there is no maximum age limit.
A unanimous agreement of the scholarship committee will make award decisions.
An applicant must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 to apply.
Scholarship applications MUST INCLUDE ALL REQUIRED ELEMENTS or they will not be considered.
Any applicants who have previously received Girls Incorporated® of Fort Smith scholarships and wish to reapply must demonstrate to the scholarship selection committee’s satisfaction that:
They are in good standing at the institution of higher learning in which they are enrolled.
They have completed sufficient coursework or training to be considered a regular, full-time student.
They have applied previous funding toward appropriate educational expenses.
All applicants must be available for an interview as part of the scholarship award selection.
The Roger E. and Charlene Curtis Memorial Scholarship may be awarded for vo-tech or professional training at an approved accredited institution.
The J.C. and June B. Alexander, Jr. Scholarship funds may be awarded to more than one applicant if the scholarship committee so chooses.
11. All scholarship recipients must be willing and able to volunteer for, or make appearances on behalf of Girls Incorporated® of Fort Smith as requested.
Application Process:
Each applicant must submit a completed typed or legible hand-written application by the postmarked due date of April 26th, 2013.
Each applicant must submit a completed information sheet with all relevant questions answered thoroughly.
Each applicant must submit a current income tax return from parent or guardian or a personal return if not still considered a dependent on parent’s tax return.
An applicant must submit two current written recommendations from educational advisors, high school counselors, principal, or Girls Inc. employee.
An applicant must submit a high school transcript (college transcript if applicant has attended college).
Each application must include a recent photo.

Scholarship awards will be payable directly to the college/university and are for the full year of enrollment (2 full semesters, including summer).
Applicants will be called during the first few weeks in May to schedule their scholarship interviews.
Scholarship awards will be announced during the end of May or very first of June via emailed letter or regular mail.
A reception may be held in the recipient’s honor, if funding is available that year.
