Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan Toothbrushing/Fluoride/Sealants


Objectives:

Students identify plaque in mouth; demonstrate how to remove plaque; and are able to answer the following questions:

1. What plaque is,

2. What plaque does,

3. Where it hides,

4. How to remove plaque,

5. How to prevent cavities


Visuals for class Materials for class

1. plaque/germs disclosing packs (cup, disclosing tablet)

2. formula for cavities plaque handouts, toothbrushes, garbage

3. formula for gingivitis bag, mirrors, flashlight, tongue blades,

4. where plaque hides/flossing/brushing gloves, plaque test form

5. fluoride - fluoride toothpaste sample

6. sealants - sealant tooth

7. directions for using disclosing tablets


Activities:


1. Show visual of plaque; describe what is in plaque (germs/bacteria).


2. Show visuals of what plaque does: Formula for decay, Formula for gingivitis


3. Show visual if where plaque hides: at gumline and in between the teeth.


4. Show same visual for how to remove plaque: flossing and brushing.


5. Disclosing section:

a. show visual for directions on using disclosing tablets.

b. hand out disclosing packs: baggie with a cup and disclosing tablet, toothbrush and handout: “Case of Invisible Plaque” for 2-5 or “Plaque Attack” for 1st grade.

c. demonstrate how to use disclosing tablet.

d. have students use disclosing tablet.

e. do pre-plaque test on plaque test form for selected classes.

f. demonstrate toothbrushing and have students follow along.

g. do post plaque test on plaque form for selected classes.

h. collect cups etc. with garbage bag.


6. Show visual for fluoride. Explain how fluoride protects the smooth surfaces of the teeth from decay. Show toothpastes with fluoride, fluoride in dental office etc.


7. Show visual for sealants. Explain how sealants protect the chewing surfaces of the teeth from decay. Show tooth with sealant. How students get sealants on teeth: dental office, school-based sealant program.


8. Ask for questions/discussion; review questions listed in objective.
