Technology Needs Committee (BRITNC)

First and foremost, thank you for the time and effort you devoted to evaluating information technology needs and organization at Michigan Tech. I realize this was a challenge, but a necessary first step in aligning our technology needs with our strategic plan.

As a result of your report and our meeting, I thought it best that we “close the loop” and get back to you on where we stand on the issues you so thoughtfully explored.

Recommendation 1.  BRITNC recommends continuing the model of having central and distributed computing. Accept the recommendation.

Recommendation 2.  BRITNC recommends that operating procedures applied to information technology be consistent with, and where possible identical to, operating procedures applied to the rest of the campus. Accept the recommendation.

Recommendation 2A.  BRITNC recommends that a task force be developed to examine the funding mechanisms for central computing, the balance between general fund support and use fees, and the appropriate use of each to support central computing. Accept the recommendation. To date, the task force is being formed to provide their findings to the Vice President for Administration.  Tom Van Dam has agreed to chair the task force.

Recommendation 2B.  BRITNC recommends that the existing student computing fee structure be retained.   Accept the recommendation.

Recommendation 2C.  BRITNC recommends that the procedure for acquisition of computing equipment requires no special approvals.  Accept the recommendation. The Vice President will notify the appropriate personnel of this decision.

Recommendation 3.  BRITNC recommends that the administrative structure related to information technology be revised, with an emphasis on communication among the three major information technology components, and between each component and the user community. Accept the recommendation.

Recommendation 3A. BRITNC recommends that a position of Chief Information Officer be created responsible for IT strategy consistent with the MTU mission, policy, and prioritization of all campus IT resources.  Still under discussion.

Recommendation 4.  BRITNC recommends that the current advisory committee be revised. Accept the recommendation.

Recommendation 4A. BRITNC recommends that the CIO appoint ad hoc advisory committees. Accept general concept but final outcome is dependent on 3A.

Recommendation 4B. BRITNC recommends that University Computing Forums be held by the CIO once per semester. Accept general concept but final outcome is dependent on 3A.

Recommendation 4C. BRITNC recommends that the System Administrators Council be retained and report to the CIO. Accept general concept but final outcome is dependent on 3A.

Recommendation 4D. BRITNC recommends that the CEX be disbanded immediately.  Accept the recommendation. The Provost Office will notify the committee.

Recommendation 4E. BRITNC recommends that the CAC be disbanded. Accept the recommendation. The Provost Office will notify the committee.
