Job Description


Position Title: Mathematics Division Manager

Job Family: Talent Development Secondary

Reports to: COO – School Services


General Summary:


The Division Manager is responsible for the overall tactical management of the division, including the personnel, logistics, and support elements of assigned programs within Talent Development Secondary (TDS) to ensure the delivery of high quality services and materials to TDS schools and districts. Collaborates with the Management Team to achieve the overall goals of TDS.


Essential Job Functions:


Determines and articulates a vision for the division in alignment with the overall strategic plan to ensure that the services delivered and the materials developed to position the TDS approach and curriculum as relevant, instructionally effective, innovative, and cutting-edge.


Establishes yearly work plans for all divisional employees. Collaborates with Regional Directors, COOs, Division and Field Managers, and other personnel as needed, in the development of annual TA plans for sites to ensure that requested TDS services and materials are delivered efficiently and effectively.


Collaborates with TDS Management Team to identify problems and opportunities of a systemic nature and to develop program-wide solutions to ensure the effective implementation and integration of the TDS program or curriculum to meet the school’s needs. Supports the design of customized approaches for implementation of interventions and core curricula for sites where TD curricula is not implemented. Contributes to the development of program-wide procedures and protocols as well as works toward achieving the program’s strategic plan and objectives.


Establishes and implements plans for professional development for the division (both group plans and individual employee plans).


Responsible for the recruitment, evaluation, performance management, or other human resources processes. Interfaces with the human resources function at The Johns Hopkins University. Ensures compliance with University employment policies and procedures. Supervises division employees to monitor their performance, progress, and opportunities for improvement and growth.


Assigns facilitators to teams and schools and districts, subject to the review by COOs of TDS, based upon a needs assessment of each school and the capabilities of individual facilitators, balanced with the regionalization goals of specific region(s). Assignment decisions include input from Regional Directors, as well as Field and other Division Managers.


Ensures that appropriate divisional training documentation is in place to support the implementation of the TDS program. May include guidebook development or updating to ensure current, effective tools are available to facilitators as they implement the program or curriculum. Provides facilitators, coaches, teachers and other TDS personnel accessibility to online resources for specific instructional and leadership content.


Participates as a member of TDS’ Professional Learning Community and engages the division by achieving deep understanding through safe and effective dialogue and through group structures that allows exploration and reflection. Helps identify guidelines to build collaborative communities based on norms that all division members agree upon. This also ensures the collective growth of TDS as an organization which continues to evolve and develop its talent. May serve as PLC Leader if the need arises.


Supervises all members of the division and works in partnership with Field Managers and Regional Directors, in some cases, to annually evaluate facilitators’ performance.


Provides input and oversight to the curriculum development and implementation.


Collaborates with COOs, Regional Directors, Field and other Divisional managers to ensure that TDS is able to achieve its programmatic goals and objectives.


Coordinates and conducts advanced training for TDS member schools to ensure that particularly challenging environments or issues are accounted for in the implementation process.


Provides site based modeling and job embedded support to members of the division


Represents the division in meeting with higher-level school officials (i.e. superintendents and other administrative personnel).


Performs other special projects designed to further the mission and philosophy of TDS and CSOS at The Johns Hopkins University.


Scope of Responsibility:


Knows the formal and informal departmental goals, standards, policies, and procedures which may include some familiarity and relationships with other divisions or schools. Is sensitive to the interrelationship of both people and functions within the department.


Decision Making:


On a regular and continuous basis, exercises judgment when dealing with the needs of both TDS and participating schools. Routinely spends time making decisions around personnel issues. Ultimately assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results.


Authority:


May represent his or her interests when dealing with matters of personnel and school integration issues. Has the ability to direct his or her workload, as needed.


Communication:


Exchanges non-routine, sometimes technically-specialized, information using tact and persuasion as appropriate. Superior oral and written communication skills are required. Communicates on a regular basis with both internal and external contacts. Internally, speaks with other Division and Field Managers, Regional Directors, COOs for TDS, and The Johns Hopkins University Human Relations function. Communicates with on-site facilitators, coaches, TDS school administrators, HBP Publishers, and a variety of research and funding agencies external to TDS.


Education:


Required: A Bachelor’s Degree (BA, BS) in Education, a Social Sciences field, or other applicable discipline.


Preferred: A Master’s Degree (MA, ME, MS) in Education, Educational Administration, Mathematics, or a combination thereof.


Experience:


Classroom experience of at least five (5) to seven (7) years is strongly preferred for this position. A strong understanding of issues in educational administration (e.g. school budgeting, school scheduling and logistics, and manpower planning) is vital. In addition, two (2) to three (3) years of experience with a school reform organization such as TDS is critical to one’s success in this position. Prior TDS experience is strongly preferred. Given the nature of this position, the need for adult learning experience and relevant administration experience (2-3 years) is critical.


In addition, an ease at utilizing multiple approaches to a varied range of problems is critical. Superior communication and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to receive constructive feedback, are required. Project management, as well as skills in change management and implementation are preferred.


Certification:


No formal certifications (beyond those prescribed in the Education section) are needed for this position.
