ASSOCIATE LECTURER AWARDED MBE DR MEG HOPKINS AN OU

Associate Lecturer awarded MBE

Dr Meg Hopkins, an OU tutor from Newton Stewart, has been awarded an MBE for services to higher education in Dumfries and Galloway.

Dr Hopkins, originally from Annan, has worked for The Open University for 26 years. Her passion for increasing access to higher education, particularly in rural Scotland, and for encouraging a greater understanding of science has involved her in a variety of OU roles at both local and national level.

With a background in genetics, she joined the OU in 1979 as a Tutor Counsellor on the university's first introductory science course. As a tutor she has provided academic support to hundreds of OU students across Scotland and the North of England, and continues to teach biology and oceanography courses.

She has played an active part in opening up access to higher education in Dumfries and Galloway through various roles such as Location Counsellor and Outreach Co-ordinator for the OU in the region.

At national level, she acted as Chair of The Open University's Associate Lecturer Committee from 2000-2002 and is currently a member of the university's executive governing body, the OU Council.

Her extensive experience in supporting non-traditional learners led to her appointment as lecturer in maths and computing, then education co-ordinator at Penninghame Open Prison near Newton Stewart, where she worked for 10 years.

Congratulating Dr Hopkins on her appointment, The Open University's Scottish Director, Peter Syme said: "Meg's award is greatly deserved. She has played a special part in inspiring and supporting people to get involved with learning. In a rural area like Dumfries and Galloway, the options open to people for learning and training can often seem limited. Through her work, Meg has helped to make countless local people aware of what The Open University can offer them, and just as importantly, to help them recognise their own potential."
