Description:
Abstract: Spatial explicit socio-economic data are presented describing three alternative demographic-economic development scenarios over the period 1990-2100 in ten year time intervals and at the level of 30 arc-minute grid cells. The data include: population count grids (people per grid cell), population density grids (people per square km per grid cell), GDP at market exchange rates (GDPmer) count grids (US$1990 per grid cell), GDPmer density grids (1000 US$1990 per ha per grid cell), land/water mask (1/0), regional mask (GGI regional disaggregation, for a definition see:
http://www.iiasa.ac.at/web-apps/ggi/GgiDb/dsd?Action=htmlpage&page=about), country mask (UN country codes), and cell area in square km. An original developed algorithm is used to assign shares of national population and GDP scenarios to individual sub-national grid cells for three different scenarios and under explicit consideration of urbanization and rural-urban income differences.
Purpose: Provide dynamic and spatially heterogeneous scenarios of future population and GDP at a grid cell-level resolution that can be used in environmental, social, and economic studies, e.g. for climate impact and vulnerability assessments.
Designated use: The spatially explicit scenario data have been developed to describe possible spatial patterns and distributions of population and GDP at (sub-)continental scales. Use of individual grid cells information as projected scenario values is specifically not recommended.
Supplemental information: An article describing methods and data sources is available online via Science Direct doi:10.1016/j.techfore.2006.05.023
