Saturday March 8th, 10.45-11-45

Fiona Dunbar ELI Málaga

Yes, They (All) Can! Roads to Success for YLs

All classes are mixed ability – no two students are the same. In this session, we will look at classroom activities and techniques through which motivation, personalisation and creativity can help each and every one of our primary students experience success and achievement in their EFL learning. The session is for teachers of young learners (4-12).

Fiona Dunbar has been teaching, training and managing in EFL for 20 years, mainly in Andalucía. She has the Cambridge DipTEFLA and is currently Director of the ELI language schools in Málaga and a Team Leader for Cambridge YLE examiners. With her young learner classes, she is particularly interested in motivation, personalisation, creativity and their impact on language acquisition.

Your favourite website:

I spend much more time than I’d like on facebook, but I do find lots of inspiration for the classroom there from some of my contacts and groups.

.

A gadget you can’t live without:

I’m a recent convert to kindle. I never thought I would be happy ‘reading a book without the book’, but it’s so much more convenient.

Something you'd never throw away:

I’m a bit of a hoarder, so this is a bit of a tricky one. I’m trying to get rid of more stuff, but I have a box of photos, letters and other keepsakes which I know I’ll never throw away.

Who or what inspires you?

I am constantly inspired by my friends, family, students, colleagues, strangers,... I find inspiration in a drip-drip of little things and ideas which together make up the bigger picture, rather than in one thing or person.

Useful teaching tool:

Paper and coloured pens – there’s not much you can’t do with them

Your favourite lesson:

The ones where I and the students say “Is it that time already?” at the end.

Your favourite bit about your talk:

Whenever I do a talk, my favourite bit is hearing the participants’ ideas and thoughts – there’s always something interesting there, so I’m looking forward to hearing them.

A lesson you've learnt while teaching:

There’s no such thing as teaching – it’s all about the learning.
