2. Backs to be attached to standards by means of four 1/4" diameter anodized aluminum step bolts. Bolts to have recessed square in head to assist in installing. Bolt shall pass through back panel and cast iron standard, and be secured by nut.

3. Backs will be recessed for 1-3/4" x 2-3/4" aluminum number plates, have numbers are 1-1/2" high. If number plates are not required, this information should be included in specification.

B. Seat:

1. Seats shall be of one piece, double walled HDPE, molded to an approximate 34"

radius from side to side with form fitting curve from front and rear on center line. Seat to be molded to simulate slats to match appearance of back.

2. Seat length shall be approximately 15-1/2" and width shall be 3" less than the chair.

3. Seats to be attached to seat arms by means of four 1/4" diameter anodized aluminum step bolts. The four attaching bolts will pass through the seats and be secured with and nut and flat washer.

C. Seat Arms:

1. Seat arms are ASTM A48 for Class 25 gray cast iron.

2. Seat arm is cast in a tapering inverted “L” shape. The top leg of the seat arms must fit the underside of the seat shape. Each arm will provide attachment of seats with not less than two bolts per arm.

3. The inner half of the chair hinge mechanism including bearing pocket, stops, and fold location tab are integrally cast with the seat arm.

D. Hinges:

1. Hinges shall consist of a cast iron pivot securely fastened to the standards by a 5/16” SAE grade 5 through bolt. Rotation of seat on hinge pivot shall be on a stainless steel bearing. Both “up” and “down” stops on seat shall be cushioned with Neoprene rubber to reduce noise.

2. Seat hinge shall automatically fold to a 3/4 uniform position at all times without adjustment. It shall fold and additional 2 ½” to 100% to provide additional clearance.

E. Seat Lift Mechanism:

1. Each chair shall be equipped with two seat lifting devices attached to the sides of seat arm castings, which shall lift the seat to a folded position without assistance. Mechanisms are located at the side face of the chair standards to not be a hazard to occupants or their clothing.

2. The mechanism shall consist of cast iron and plastic housings enclosing a wound spring with seven (7) active coils. Spring shall be formed of 0.120” oil tempered spring wire coated with Teflon. The spring is neither non-handed nor directional allowing use in either the left or right mechanism.

3. Seat lifting device shall be preloaded with sufficient torque to raise seat from any point in rotation.

4. Lifting device shall be in accordance with ASTM F851-87 Test Method for Self-Rising Seat Mechanism and be designed and installed to prevent squeaks or excessive noise in operation.

F. Standards:

1. End standards, middle standards and seat arms, are ASTM A48 class 25 or greater strength grey iron. Standards shall be cleaned by sandblasting or rattling and surfaces shall be smooth of sharp projections, free from pits, blowholes and fins. Standards shall have integrally cast 1 ½” wide armrest.

2. Back supporting member of standards shall be designed with curved shape in vertical plane to comfortably fit back of chair occupant. It shall provide for average back pitch of not less than 16 degrees, as measured from vertical. Back supporting member shall be “U” shaped to provide proper protection for ends of back, and shall further provide for attachment of backs. Standards must be designed for proper relationship between chairs and risers, regardless of varying heights of risers. Proper back pitch and seat height shall be maintained throughout installation, regardless of riser height. Standard must be designed so rear edge seat will clear riser in folding, and that corner of platform will not interfere with chair occupant.

3. One portion of seat hinge mechanism shall be cast integrally with standard to provide constant seat height in all rows.

4. Types:

a. Riser: Front member of lower portion of standard shall be designed in curved shape to provide clearance for sweeping tread beneath chair. Rear member of lower portion must be integral, and designed for direct attachment to riser. Rear flange of standard shall be securely and immovably attached to riser at not less than two points. The rear flange shall be stepped and there is no projection of any portion of a riser mount standard onto the tread below.

b. Floor Type: Standards shall be cast in one of five inclines to best fit floor incline and provide the hinge point at a height to maintain proper seat height. Floor pad shall provide two locations, fore and aft, for selecting a front and rear attachment point to concrete, aluminum or steel deck floors. For wood floors all four locations must be used.

G. Hardware:

1. Step bolts and nuts for attaching backs to standards shall be clear anodized tempered aluminum, with bolt heads burnished. Nuts used with aluminum bolts are case hardened steel with an aluminized coating to resist galvanic reaction.
