GUIDELINES

The following guidelines are used to assist the Honorary Degrees Committee in its consideration of nominations for the award of an Honorary Degree.

Nominations on behalf of women and other frequently under-represented groups are particularly welcome.

1 The nominee has either academic or professional and/or public distinction, including a contribution to fields of activity of particular importance to the work of the University.

2 The nomination has particular relevance for Scotland and the University, or for the city of Glasgow and the University.

3 The award would emphasise and reinforce a continuing beneficial association with the University or the Higher Education sector more widely.

4 The award is timely in that any significant delay might hamper the intention.

5 The nominee has rendered exceptional service to the University.

6 The nominee is likely to be available and willing to receive the degree, in person, in the year in question. The University's expectation is that nominees will have their degrees conferred upon them within two years of an invitation being made.

7 It is not essential that nominees satisfy all of the guidelines stated above.

Extracts from Resolution No 138 of the University Court, 1974

The Senatus Academicus shall annually appoint a Committee, to be called the Committee on Honorary Doctors’ Degrees, consisting of the Principal and such other members of the Senatus as the Senatus shall from time to time determine. It shall be the duty of the Committee to select persons to be recommended to the Senatus for the conferment of the Honorary Degrees and to present its recommendations to the Senatus.

No resolution to confer any Honorary Doctor’s Degree shall be moved in the Senatus except upon special notice given after a lapse of fourteen days from the date when the recommendation was presented.

The conferment upon any person of an Honorary Degree shall not of itself qualify that person to become a candidate for any other Degree or Diploma.

No application from or on behalf of any person desirous of receiving any Honorary Degree shall be entertained
