PROCEDURES FOR CATTLE TAIL BLEED

If using a vacutainer and double ended bleeding needle:

  1. Assembling the vacutainer and double ended needle:

  1. Screw bleeding needle onto needle holder

  2. Insert (red-top) vacutainer tube into opposite end of needle holder

  3. Push tube until the stopper on the tube touches end of needle

  4. Do NOT puncture stopper- If punctured the tube vacuum will be lost and tube will no longer be able to be used

  5. Note: Needle must be properly discarded after ONE use but holder may be used more than once if properly cleaned

  1. Hold assembled tube and needle in one hand

  1. Lift cow’s tail with opposite hand

  1. Find penetration target directly beneath the tail in soft areas above rectum

  1. Retrieval of blood sample:

  1. At the midline, 2-3 inches from the base of the tail, insert the needle perpendicularly to the underside of the tail approximately ½ to ¾ inches deep.

  2. Direct the needle into the tail vein until blood appears where needle and tube stopper join.

  3. At the appearance of the blood, push the tube all the way onto the needle.

  4. Note that blood will rapidly start to fill the tube. If this does not happen then redirect the needle to find the vein.

  5. Keep needle under the skin or the vacuum will be completely lost. If vacuum loss occurs before filling of blood tube the tube will no longer be able to be used and must be replaced.

  6. Collect 2cc or more of whole blood.

  7. Note: If you are using a needle and syringe instead of the vacutainer and double ended bleeding needle, blood must IMMEDIATELY be emptied from the syringe into the red top vacutainer tube and syringe properly discarded. DO NOT SEND ANY BLOOD SAMPLES IN SYRINGES!

  1. Correct steps for submission of samples

  1. Carefully and clearly label vacutainer tube with animal ID using a permanent marker.

  2. Tubes must be refrigerated until ready for shipment.

  3. Fully complete Pregnancy test submission form (Important: Be sure you mark the correct number of samples actually sent and that samples are clearly labeled).

  4. Ship samples in a box using Fed Ex or UPS for morning delivery. (See contact information below)

  5. DFA members may send samples with couriers.

  6. Be sure to carefully pack samples so that vials do not break in route.
