Perception of formant transitions in real speech vowel-to-vowel utterances

Perception of formant transitions in real speech vowel-to-vowel utterances

Giannis Syrigos, Keele University

The subject of my experiments is to investigate the importance of the first (F1) and second (F2) formant transitions in real speech vowel-to-vowel utterances. A series of experiments were conducted with the /a/-/i/ utterance to measure the perceptual tolerances of these transitions. Three different types of tests were carried out.

Type 1: Formant transitions with varying transition durations. a) F1 and F2 start simultaneously and b) F1 and F2 end simultaneously.

Type 2: Formant transitions with varying transition delays between F1 and F2 transitions. Three different duration values of the two-formant transition were used.

Type 3: Formant transitions with varying F2 transition durations with simultaneous midpoints of the F1 and F2 transitions. Three different F1 transition durations were used.

Different sound files were prepared for each test by changing the formant transitions and durations in a real speech /a/-/i/ utterance. For this purpose a step of 10 to 40ms was used.

Eight different listeners were used for our experiments. All the experiments were conducted in a soundproof room and the sound output was calibrated to 65-70dB(A).

So far the third test results have shown that if the second formant transition is symmetric in time with respect to the first formant, differences of up to 60ms are tolerated. Some preliminary results for the first test have shown that delays between the first and second formant transitions of up to 40ms are not perceived.

More tests are to be conducted with the /a/-/i/ and also with the /j/-/a/ approximant-to-vowel transitions.
