Abstract: This article mainly examines the weakness of the prevailing R&D model which is linear and disconnected and then also explains the results that can be achieved when the systems of innovation concepts used for greater connectivity. We argue that post-harvest innovation system provides a useful conceptual framework for understanding the institutional context of innovation The paper illustrates this from policy perspective with some recent examples from India where economic liberalization has brought the opportunities encouraging the participation of a broader spectrum of actors in the post-harvest innovation system – particularly the private sector. The case studies presented illustrate the opportunities and the difficulties of making different scientific elements of the systems effectively work together. It also explains how the interventions successful in managing and facilitating a series of relationships with a wide range of actors. The paper then goes on to discuss the way the innovation system principle used to develop a new approach to research management and implementation and the implications of these concepts and approaches for post-harvest research and ways of increasing its impact on poor rural households in developing countries. The concluding section highlights the developing capacity of post-harvest innovation systems, and institutional innovations critical for international development and that could support poor in many ways
