INTRODUCTION TO MENTAL HEALTH &

SPIRITUAL & PASTORAL CARE

A 10 week Programme

exploring issues of Mental Health

within Spiritual & Pastoral Care

COURSE AIMS

The training aims to enable participants to develop the relevant skills, knowledge and self-awareness of mental health issues to be able to provide helpful pastoral care within a community/faith setting and, or to visit patients on Surrey & Borders hospital wards in order to offer appropriate pastoral support

COURSE OBJECTIVES

To increase knowledge of mental health conditions
Understanding the role of religion and spirituality in mental health
To be able to identify spiritual resources that are supportive of a person’s mental health, and spiritual experiences that can be indicative of mental illness
To develop understanding of psychological processes
To demonstrate an ability to self-reflect and listen to others
To understand the theory and practice of The Compassionate Approach to listening

MENTAL HEALTH &

SPIRITUAL & PASTORAL CARE

COURSE EXPECTATIONS

Participants are required to commit to attend a minimum of 80% of the sessions.

Reading: A small library of relevant books for student loan will be available throughout the training.

Mental Health Field Project: Participants will be expected to write and share a brief report of their research about their care setting [250 words].

OUTCOME OF TRAINING

Participants who have successfully completed the training will be better equipped to offer support for mental health issues in a community pastoral setting or will be able to apply to become a Chaplaincy Assistant for Surrey & Borders, Department of Pastoral & Spiritual Care

Participants will be encouraged to seek ongoing support and supervision for any further pastoral work they do.
