Example of Non-governmental Organizations Assisting Forest Concessions
WWF activities in Central Africa are supporting the sustainable use and conservation of forest biodiversity
Activities and results:
The implementation of sustainable forest management plans can benefit from the expertise of local and international conservation NGOs. The latter are often present in the field and have a very good knowledge of ecological priorities and regulations.
WWF has been collaborating with a number of logging companies in the Congo Basin and adding its expertise on various issues such as:
Providing technical assistance to logging companies in wood certification;
Facilitating creation of forest management units in logging companies;
Training technical staff of logging companies in various domain of sustainable forest management (exploitation techniques, protection of biodiversity hotspots, etc.).
Promoting good governance and capacity building of local management institutions;
Participatory mapping of pygmy used zones in national parks for regulatory access Establishment of ant-poaching wildlife fund by logging companies and Safari Hunting outfits.
Carrying out systematic wildlife inventories in national parks and surrounding used zones (community hunting zones and logging concessions);
Identifying biodiversity hotspots in logging concession.
