Making a periodic teacher assessment judgement for reading using APP
Review the evidence
Consider whether the evidence:
demonstrates a range of reading experiences, for example:
shared, guided and independent reading
book-talk, reading journal responses, drama and role play
cross-curricular opportunities
includes responses to a range of:
text types, e.g. narrative, non-fiction and poetry
text formats, e.g. magazines, film clips, multimodal texts
demonstrates independence and choice
Choose a level boundary and select the relevant assessment guidelines to use
Review the evidence and complete an assessment guidelines grid
Making AF judgements
Review evidence marking bullet points/statements with instances of evidence. You may choose to do this on a day to day basis.
Decide which bullet points/statements to highlight. Is there enough evidence to highlight a statement?
L1 In some reading, usually with support
L2 In some reading
L3 In most reading
L4 + Across a range of reading
Consider the highlighted bullet points/statements and decide which level has been achieved in each AF. Tick the appropriate level related box.
Making an overall level judgement
Use the making a level judgement diagram overleaf.
Checking the overall level judgement
Compare judgements to standards files at the same level to confirm judgements are in line with national standards.
Use APP assessments to inform planning and teaching
Use the assessment guidelines to identify gaps in learning.
Plan next steps in learning from PNS learning objectives.
