CHALLENGING BEHAVIOUR POLICY INTRODUCTION THE CARE HOME IS COMMITTED CHALLENGING BEHAVIOUR POLICY

Introduction

The Care Home is committed to the provision of safe and secure services to all its residents and is committed to the support of all the residents and their nurses and carers. Effective and respectful communication between employees, their colleagues, residents, nurses, carers, families, health professionals, and visitors, are key tools in the prevention and management of challenging behaviour.

The Care Home is committed to minimising the risk of challenging behaviour and to ensuring that the policies and procedures used to prevent and deal with challenging behaviour within the Care Home are clear and evidence based. The Care Home will develop linked procedures and protocols for the prevention and management of challenging behaviour.

Risk Assessments

The assessment of risk is recognised by the Care Home as a key process in the identification of hazards and factors that may lead to or contribute to challenging behaviour. The risk assessment will help to identify what preventative measures can be put in place to reduce the risk and impact of potentially challenging behaviour.

The Care Home will neither tolerate nor accept any acts of violence or aggression towards its residents or its employees, and it recognises it has a legal duty under Section 2 of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 to ensure the health, safety, and welfare at work of employees, so far as that is reasonably practicable.

Everyone has a duty of care to behave in an acceptable and appropriate manner. The Care Home’s employees and residents have the right to be treated in an environment that is safe and secure.

It is expected that all employees, residents, relatives, and members of the public behave in a respectful and appropriate manner towards the Care Home’s employees and residents. Intentional violence and verbal abuse towards the Care Home’s employees or residents is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Training

The Care Home recognises the importance of ensuring so far as practicable, through pre-employment and regular performance appraisal processes, that all employees have the necessary knowledge, skills and physical capability to manage potential violence and aggression in their role within the Care Home.

The Care Home will seek to minimise the risk of injury or ill-health to employees, residents and others resulting from violence, aggression and challenging behaviour by the use of proactive, preventative and positive management strategies.

It will provide appropriate information, support and training that will enable employees to identify, assess, prevent, manage and cope with potentially challenging and violent situations.
