IUPAC Project revue:7 /1/99 - Strategies to set global quality specifications in laboratory medicine

One work item of ISO/TC 212 has been to define analytical quality goals for laboratory medicine, clinical chemistry in particular. The normal procedure in ISO is that a draft Standard is developed that is circulated to the member bodies. When the first draft was circulated, the profession had many objections and the same was true when the second draft eventually appeared. At that time the Division VII decided to try to pull together all interested parties to a workshop - consensus meeting in April 1999.

Thanks to a starting grant from IUPAC, Project 7/1/99, we could rapidly arrange our forces and announce a program, invite speakers and raise additional funding. The main funding was by participants but industry also gave support. I am very pleased that IFCC, (International Federation of clinical chemistry and Laboratory Medicine), WHO and Nordiska Ministerrådet contributed significantly. The Clinical Chemistry Lookout Foundation, a Swedish fund for education and information dissemination, underwrote the accrued deficit.

The conference was held in the Nobel forum at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm Sweden April 24/26, 1999. About 120 participants attended from 19 countries and there were 22 invited speakers. All speakers delivered their manuscripts that were then subjected to peer reviews and published in a special issue of the Scandinavian Journal of Clinical and Laboratory Investigation: ‘Strategies to set global analytical quality specifications in laboratory medicine’. (SJCLI 1999;59(7):475-586.). The journal is normally distributed in about 2 500 copies and we distributed about 1 000 additional copies around the world through IFCC, industry, conferences and a professional network. A copy was sent to IUPAC for archiving.

Representatives of the ISO/TC 212 were also present and as a result the ISO standard has been completely rewritten to better comply with the specifications of the profession.

We believe this conference, the discussions, the awareness of the problems and the publication has had a major impact on future laboratory work and quality management.

Sincerely,

Anders Kallner
