Students Driving Owned and/or Non-Owned Vehicles
at the Cooperative Education Placement
Guidelines for:
Placement Supervisors
Students have been instructed not to use owned (personal) vehicles to conduct company business; if they do so it is at their own risk.
Students have been instructed not to drive non-owned (company, customer) vehicles while on placements; however, if the employer/supervisor chooses to have students drive as part of their placement responsibilities it must be understood that:
The company assumes liability. – there is no excess because it is not being driven on the business of the board – rather business of the employer
This must be documented on the Personalized Placement Learning Plan and authorized by the placement supervisor.
If a Cooperative Education placement supervisor requires a student to drive a non-owned (company) vehicle, an employer must ensure that the company insurance policy covers an “agent” of the company (i.e., the Cooperative Education student under twenty-one years of age) and that the student’s license is appropriate. The feasibility of the placement is determined by the appropriate insurance coverage in effect.
In the event that a Cooperative Education student is asked to drive an owned and/or non-owned vehicle by the placement supervisor, the employer must clearly understand, that, in the event of an incident involving the vehicle which results in a claim for damages, the insurance carried by the owner of the vehicle on the vehicle responds to the claim.
The Cooperative Education teacher and the placement supervisor should ascertain that the student has the appropriate classification of driver’s licence to operate a non-owned vehicle. For example: some companies have insurance policies that will not cover students who, through the graduated license system have not achieved their full class G status.
Operating any unlicensed motorized equipment (ride-on lawn equipment, forklift,) mobile equipment is considered to be a high-risk activity for students and is strongly discouraged. If employers require this as a placement responsibility this must be discussed with the teacher before any equipment is used and employers are asked to:
Exercise caution
Ensure the student has received adequate training
Ensure the student has achieved any certification (if required)
Ensure the activity is included on the PPLP(Personalized Placement Learning Plan) as an employer expectation where applicable

Guidelines for:
STUDENTS / PARENTS
Students getting to and from the placement:
Arrangement and cost of student transportation and the liability associated with getting to and from a placement is the sole responsibility of the students and parents/guardians. There may be transportation funding available for students in specialized programs such as OYAP, SHSM.
Students may choose to drive an owned (personal/family) vehicle to and from their placements. The primary insurer is the vehicle owner’s insurer.
Students are encouraged to use a licensed carrier (public transportation, taxi) when available to and from co-op placements. Students may choose with parental permission to travel by non licensed carriers (friend, employer) in which case the primary insurer will be the owner’s insurer.
Students have been instructed by the teacher not to operate personal/family vehicles to conduct company business; if they do so it is at their own risk.
Students have been instructed by the teacher not to operate a non-owned vehicle (i.e., a company or customer vehicle); however, if the employer/supervisor chooses to have students drive as part of their placement responsibilities it must be understood that the primary insurer is the employer’s insurer.
The teacher and placement supervisor should ascertain that the student has the appropriate classification of driver’s licence and that the employer carries the appropriate company insurance.
The St. Clair Catholic District School Board does not recommend cooperative education students car pooling or sharing owned or non owned vehicles. If t this happens, it is understood that the primary insurer (owner of the vehicle/driver) will assume all liabilities in the event of an accident. It is also understood that the passenger is travelling at his/her own risk.
MOTOR VEHICLE INSURANCE COVERAGE IS ASSUMED BY THE OWNER OF THE VEHICLE AND IS NOT COVERED BY THE ST CLAIR CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD.
