EUROPEAN AUDIOVISUAL OBSERVATORY
The European Audiovisual Observatory is proposing opportunities for traineeships in its Department for Information on Markets and Financing.
About the European Audiovisual Observatory:
The Observatory is the only organisation of its kind to gather and analyse data on the audiovisual industries across 40 countries. It is a European public organisation, part of the Council of Europe and based in Strasbourg, France. The Observatory has 40 member States and the European Union, represented by the European Commission. The Observatory works in close collaboration with European professional organisations and specialised centres of information.
The main activities of the Department for Information on Markets and Financing include:
analysis of film, television, home video and new media markets
drafting and editing of various publications (Yearbook, FOCUS, reports on specific topics)
management of three databases (LUMIERE on film admissions in Europe, KORDA on public funding, MAVISE on television channels, on-demand audiovisual services and companies in the European Union).

Description of tasks:
The specific tasks and projects a trainee will be working on, depend on projects the Observatory will be working on at the time of the internship. In general terms, the Observatory is looking for trainees interested in collaborating in the following projects:
Support in market analysis and research on specific topics in the cinema, TV and on-demand services markets, e.g. Digital Cinema, Circulation of European films, Television News channels, Children’s television etc.
Support in preparation of publications, presentations and content to be published on the Observatory website and the preparation of a Newsletter on audiovisual markets
Collection of information on public bodies providing funding for film and audiovisual works in Europe and entry of the data into the KORDA database (www.korda.obs.coe.int)
Collection of information on the theatrical success of films in European cinemas including data entry into the LUMIERE database (www.lumiere.obs.coe.int)
Collection of TV and on-demand services related information including data entry into the MAVISE database (www.mavise.obs.coe.int )
Qualifications required:
Excellent research skills, in particular advanced web search, ideally in a film / TV / online media - related field;
Basic knowledge of and passion for at least one of the audiovisual sectors the Observatory is working in, i.e. European TV, cinema, home-video, on-demand landscapes as well as audiovisual policy.
Analytical skills, organised and methodical; Numerate;
Advanced Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel, Word, PowerPoint; Experiences in web-publishing would be an advantage;
Excellent knowledge of English and of at least one of the two other official language of the Observatory (French, German). Knowledge of one other European language will be an advantage.
Experience of database entry would be an advantage;
GENERAL PRINCIPLES
Duration:
In principle three months. Trainees are welcome all year round, but period of the traineeship may be limited due to office availability or other planning considerations.
Conditions / Benefits:
Traineeship shall consist of a period of specified duration spent in the European Audiovisual Observatory. It shall afford the trainees an opportunity to form a general idea of the organisation's activities and objectives and of the questions involved in the audiovisual sector in Europe. During traineeship, the trainees will also have an opportunity to supplement and put into practice the knowledge they have acquired from their studies or professional experience.
The trainee will work under the responsibility of the Head of Department and, in most cases, under the guidance of a specialised analyst. He/she will have their own office, fully equipped, at the Observatory headquarters, 76 allée de la Robertsau, 67000 Strasbourg, France.
No remuneration is foreseen for trainees. Travel and accommodation expenses must be covered either by the trainee or his or her institution.
Although the European Audiovisual Observatory is not in a position to offer financial compensation for traineeships, trainees can benefit from their work with the Observatory in multiple ways:
Access to a unique knowledge centre on the European audiovisual landscape;
Gain an overview and more in-depth understanding of individual European film, television and new media industries;
Possibility of using Observatory databases and publications for own research on specific topics;
Contacts with the Council of Europe and other public and professional organisations
Networking.
The trainee will be required to respect Council of Europe rules and ethical principles.
Selection:
Level of studies :
persons who have completed their higher education and/or have followed a course of higher education for at least 3 years;
candidates having followed or following technical studies, in some specific cases;
candidates from national administrations or private firms who wish to find out about, learn more about or specialise in the field of activities of the Observatory. Their interests must have a direct bearing on the questions treated by the organisation. They must have performed duties requiring knowledge of university or equivalent level for at least two years.
The selection of trainees will take account of:
Observatory agenda in terms of project priorities, manpower availability to provide guidance to the trainee, space availability;
Quality of the trainee application (motivation, qualifications, personal interest in the field of activities of the Observatory);
Trainees must have a very good knowledge of, and be able to draft competently in, one at least of the Observatory's official languages (French, English and German). A good knowledge of one of the other languages is desirable.
A proposal by the candidate of his or her own research project (in particular preparation of a Ph.D. thesis) in relation with Observatory fields of activities would be an advantage;
Participation in a research project of a public organisation (Ministry of Culture and/or communication, broadcasting regulatory authority, film agency, University research centre,…) would be an advantage.

Candidates will then be called for an interview or, should the circumstances require, may be interviewed by telephone.
The traineeship with the Observatory will be confirmed by a written agreement stating the dates of the traineeship, the department to which the trainee will be assigned and describing the tasks to be undertaken.
For traineeships undertaken within the framework of higher education, an agreement will be signed by the Observatory and the University or the educational institution in which the trainee is enrolled. It will include, among other provisions, details of the trainee's insurance coverage, confirming that they are covered in case of any illness or accident that may occur during the traineeship. Although the Council of Europe takes out basic insurance to cover trainees’ medical expenses, where no insurance cover is provided by the educational institution where the trainee is enrolled, private insurance for the same risks is recommended.
