Rules and Regulation of the

Memorial Park of Temple Beth Sholom, Inc.

at New Montefiore Cemetery - Pinelawn, NY




  1. General


1. Members of the Temple, their children, their parents, their sisters and brothers, their aunts and uncles, and their nieces and nephews, may purchase burial ground.


2a. A permit from Temple Beth Sholom, Inc. is required for interment.


2b. A permit from Temple Beth Sholom, Inc is required for the erection of a memorial

stone of any kind.


2c. Neither permit shall be issued until payment for the entire plot (family, single or double) has been paid for in full.


3a. Burial of persons not of the Jewish faith is strictly prohibited.


3b. A Jewish Committal Service must be conducted at the cemetery at the time of every funeral.


3c. A Rabbi shall officiate at this committal service.


3d. No non-Jewish clergyman or other officiant shall be permitted to conduct any other service, nor to share with the Rabbi in the committal service which the Rabbi conducts.


4. Graves/plots are not transferable or assignable without the express written permission of Temple Beth Sholom.


5. No non-Jewish religious symbols are permitted to mark any plot or grave in the Temple Beth Sholom Memorial Park.


6. Temple Beth Sholom, Inc. may from time to time, revise these rules and regulations and make amendments thereto as may be necessary for the proper administration and conduct of its Memorial Park.


  1. These rules are in addition to the Rules and Regulations of New Montefiore Cemetery which are made a part hereof and are available upon request by writing to New Montefiore Cemetery, Pinelawn, Long Island, New York.


  1. All Monuments


  1. Monument dealers shall submit three sketches or prints with the specifications of design, lettering, and description of granite used. Two of the sketches will be returned to the dealer with the indicated approval of Temple Beth Sholom, Inc. if all requirements have been complied with. All inscriptions on family monuments, benches, headstones, and footstones must be approved by Temple Beth Sholom, Inc.


2. All family monuments, benches, headstones, and footstones shall be constructed of selected first-grade certified Barre or white granite equal in quality and durability. They shall be steeled or polished and shall be completely finished on top and on all sides. The work shall be delivered clean, well-cut, and erected in a first class workmanship manner. Any stone showing point, drill or tool marks, or strain from removal of a rubber mat used for sand engraving, shall not be considered first class workmanship. Skids must be provided by the monument dealer over which to transport the stone. Any monument work not up to specification in work or quality, or developing defects within five years shall be the responsibility of the monument dealer, who must replace it. A guaranty in writing to this effect shall be delivered to the Temple with the certificate mentioned in #B1 above.


3. All lettering is to be sandblasted sunken and of proper depth according to the size and proportion of the letters. No sunken panels upon which letters will be cut shall be allowed.


  1. Photographs or statuary of any kind or description are prohibited, and monuments having holes for pictures will be rejected.


C. Family Plots


1. A family monument may be erected on each family plot consisting of four or more

graves.


2a. For family plots of 4 to 22 graves - the family monument shall not be higher than 4” overall, including base and die. The base is not to exceed 80% of the width of the plot, with a maximum length of 10 ft.


2b. For family plots of 24 or more graves - the family monument shall not be higher than 4 ft overall, including base and die. The base is not to exceed 80% of the width of the plot, with a maximum length of 12 ft.


2c. All bases shall have not less than 3” projection on either end, and 2” front and back.


3. Each grave must be marked with a footstone to indicate the location of the interment. These footstones shall not exceed 12” wide by 24” long by 4” high and must be set flush with the grade. Footstones shall be of the same granite as used in the family monument and top surfaces shall be steeled or polished.

4. The family monument shall have the last names of the families on its face. The full name of the deceased may be inscribed on the footstone marker.


5. Benches will be allowed on family plots of four or more graves. Only one bench will be permitted on a family plot. Two graves must be designated for the use of the bench. These graves will not be available for interments. The bench must be centered across the two graves and be parallel to the family monument. The bench and legs shall be of the same granite as used in the family monument and must be steeled or polished. The size of the bench will be 3’-6” x 1’-4” x 0’-4”. The size of the legs will be 0’-4” x 1’-4” x 1’-2”. The last name of the families can be inscribed on the bench.


D. Single & Double Plots [Row I Only].


1. Temple Beth Sholom has designated and set aside an area of its Memorial Park for single and double graves only.


2. A headstone may be erected on each single or double grave.


3a. For single graves - the headstone shall not be higher than 4 ft. overall, including base and die.


3b. The maximum length of a single headstone shall be 1’ 10” (22 inches).


3c. The maximum thickness of a single headstone shall be 8 inches.


4a. For double graves - the headstone shall not be higher than 4 ft. overall, including base and die.


4b. The maximum length of a double headstone shall be 3’ 8” (44 inches).


4c. The maximum thickness of a double headstone shall be 8 inches.


  1. All bases shall be a uniform size of 1 ft. high and shall have a 2” projection on both ends, and 2” front and back.


6a. The face of all headstones must be either steeled or polished.


6b. All other sides of the headstone must be either smooth or polished.


7. Footstones on bases can not be substituted for a headstone.

8. Under special circumstances (hardship), the Temple may allow the utilization of a footstone on a grave to indicate the location of the interment. These footstones shall not exceed 12” wide by 24” long by 4” high and must be set flush with the grade. The footstone must be placed at the foot of the grave.


9. Footstones shall be of the same granite as used in family monuments and top surfaces shall be steeled or polished.


10. Benches are not permitted on single or double graves.


E. Plantings


1. The plots must be left free of all obstructions.


2. No mounds, beds, or solid covers on graves are permitted.


3. Planting are allowed in accordance with the following:


i. Grave plantings are allowed after an interment. Grave plantings should consist of Mature Yews (consisting of 3 shrubs 18” – 24” wide) purchased from the cemetery. In addition, “Perpetual Care” is required to be purchased from the cemetery for all grave plantings.


ii. No trees shall be planted without written permission of the Temple, and must not be cut down nor removed without the consent of the Temple.


4. If any trees or shrubs situated in any lot shall, by means of their roots, branches, or otherwise, become detrimental to adjoining lots or walks, or inconvenient to pedestrians, Temple Beth Sholom, Inc. shall have the right, in its sole discretion, to enter said lot and remove said trees or shrubs, or such parts thereof as are determined to be detrimental or inconvenient.
