The holy bishop Basilius the Great was born in the year of 330 in the Cappadokian Caesarea in an aristocratic and welthy family. He studied for the leading scholars in Caesarea, Constantinopel and Athens and became a philosopher, linguistic, orator, lawyer, scientist and theologian.

At the beginning he lived ascetically in different monasteries in Syria, Mesopotamia, Palestine and Egypt. After having returned to Caesarea he became a presbyterian and later a bishop. The holy bishop Basilius put together the order of liturgy, many prayers, ”Conversation about the Six Days” (the first six days of God´s creation of the world) and other works. He was characterized by his good nature and his Christian courage. He was the Orthodox Confession´s indefatigable defender and he even founded a monastery in Caesarea.


Basilius the Great passed away in the year of 379 at the age of 49.

Den helige biskopen Basilius den Store föddes år 330 i Kappadokiens Caesarea i en förnäm och välbärgad familj. Han studerade för de främsta lärarna i Caesarea, Konstantinopel och Athen och blev filosof, språkvetare, talare, jurist, naturvetare och teolog.


Basilius levde till en början asketiskt i olika kloster i Syrien, Mesopota-mien, Palestina och Egypten. Efter att ha återvänt till Caesarea blev han presbyter och sedan biskop. Den helige biskopen Basilius komponerade Liturgins ordning, många böner, ”Samspråk om de Sex Dagarna” (skapelsens första sex dagar) och andra verk. Han utmärkte sig genom sin fromhet och sitt kristna mod, han var den ortodoxa trosbekännelsens outtröttlige förkämpe och grundade även kloster i Caesarea.


Basilius den Store avsomnade år 379 vid 49 års ålder.
