Reading:

Students will

  • draw inferences when reading.

  • find the theme in a story.

  • compare and contrast characters, setting or events.

  • find the main idea and its supporting details.

  • understand figurative language.

  • compare and contrast stories from the same genre.

  • use texts to locate an answer or to solve a problem.

  • explain how authors support an idea.



Math:

Students will

  • understand and explain the value of digits.

  • read, write, and compare decimals to thousandths.

  • multiply multi-digit whole numbers.

  • divide four-digit dividends by two-digit divisors.

  • solve word problems that involve fractions.

  • multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction.

  • divide fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by fractions.

  • find the volume of objects.

Welch Elementary staff will work with students and their families to support students’ success in the West Virginia College and Career Readiness Standards for all content areas.


Family connections:

  1. Lessons will include real world situations for application of content introduced.

  2. Lessons are designed to use prior information from previous grades and Everyday Math units.

  3. Make myself available for extra help or one on one activities during planning time, lunchtime, and when available after school.

  4. Students will have the opportunity to work with peer tutors upon need and availability.

Welch Elementary School students, staff and parents jointly developed these key ideas to make our children successful in content areas. Connections between home and school:

  1. Be actively engaged in all lessons.

  2. Be prepared for lessons every day with all necessary materials.

  3. Ensure homework is completed at home and ready to be turned in the next day.

  4. Be actively present at school, and focused on study/homework at home.

  5. Maintain data notebooks and agenda books in order to stay current on study focus.

FOCUS AT HOME


Welch Elementary staff and parents worked together to develop ideas about how families can support students’ success in reading and math.


Key at-home activities:


  1. ­­Make sure that each child completes their study/homework every night.

  2. Work with children on vocabulary expansion.

  3. Practice at least one math problem per night of division with a 3-digit dividend and a 2-digit divisor.

  4. Practice finding common multiples of one digit numbers and all common factors for numbers up to 99.

Student Achievement Goals

School Goals:

  1. Welch Elementary School will increase by 3% the number of students scoring at a proficient level in math and reading on the 2020 WV Statewide Summative Assessment.

  2. Welch Elementary School will promote a culture of high expectations and positive relationships by increasing the average as measured by the relationship measures on the Spring 2019 S3 climate survey.

A compact is an agreement which outlines how the parents, the school staff, and the students will share responsibility for improved student academic achievement, and the means by which the school and parents will build and develop partnerships that will help children achieve the state’s high standards.

Student Achievement Goals

District Goals:

  1. McDowell County Schools will increase the percentage of all students in grades 3-11 who are proficient in English language arts by 2% annually and mathematics by 3% annually through high quality instruction utilizing WV's College & Career Readiness Standards, as measured by 2019 WV General Summative Assessments results.

  2. McDowell County Schools will increase parental engagement opportunities by 3% to strengthen partnerships between home, school, homeless shelters, and communities as measured by My Learning Plan parental involvement documentation for the 2019-2020 school year.

  3. McDowell County Schools will improve school climate by promoting a culture of high expectations for staff, students and parents through positive relationship building during the 2019-2020 school year as measured by school culture parent survey question 10b (2% increase), improved attendance (2% increase) and dropout rate (.5% decrease), and fewer discipline reports (3% decrease in out-of-school suspensions).
