Guidance for getting through Tomas Maestro

Leaving CAR turn to port and head on a bearing of 90 degrees which (wind direction permitting) will bring you to the entrance to Tomas Maestre marina and canal. Entering the canal between the two sea walls you will pass the overflow marina on your left and over the sea wall on your right is the main marina. Just past the fuel point on your right you will pass the main entrance to the marina also on your right. Immediately past the entrance there is a waiting quay for the bridge, again on your right. You can see the bridge immediately in front of you and there is a good bar/restaurant right alongside the quay which is very handy for a refreshment and loo stop. Incidentally, this could be a very good destination for a day sail as there didn´t appear to be anybody checking who was moored there.

The bridge opens every two hours starting at 8.00am and stays open 15 minutes. Surprisingly it took us nearly 10 minutes to motor from the quay to the bridge so you don´t want to hang about. You could actually leave a bit earlier as the bridge timings were on the dot (unusual for Spain !). We found that our little motor was a lot slower than our bigger sisters in the convoy and some passed us as we were lagging behind.

Continue past the bridge and the canal bends to the right and opens out. Carry straight on past the lighthouse at the end of the sea wall on your left and about half way between that and the island you will see a collection of buoys which confused us somewhat (they are not marked on the chart that we have on the boats !). Having checked my navigation handbook today we did (more by luck than judgement !)do the right thing. At the first red buoy and going to the left of it, turn East (left) and head out through the middle of the channel between the lighthouse and the island towards the open sea. When you are well past the sea wall turn North (left) and continue on a bearing just slightly West of North.

You will be sailing almost parallel to the La Manga strip and eventually pass the gap at the end. By now you should be able to see the piles of salt at the San Pedro Salinas off your port bow. The marina is to the right of that and you will eventually be able to see the masts of the boats. To the right of the marina there is what appears to be a large blockhouse and the entrance to the marina is to the left of that. There is also a large green crane at the right of the entrance. After dropping your sails, motor in through the main entrance and the channel bends round to the left and then to the right. Almost immediately you will see the fuel point on your right where you should turn right again. The temporary moorings are in front of you on your port side.

Our timings: We left CAR at 10.30 with very little wind and motored for a while although the sails were up. We eventually managed to cut the motor and although only managing about 2 knots, with the wind behind us, we arrived at the waiting quay about 13.00. We left the Tomas Maestre quay at 14.00 and arrived San Pedro marina at about 16.30. This time with a good Westerly breeze and clocking between 4 and 5 knots.

Hope you find this helpful and bon voyage to the rest of you intrepid sailors. To those of you skulking away in the UK, you don´t know what you are missing !

Phil
