Entering Communities: Principles of Good Practice

Entering Communities: Principles of Good Practice

Preparation

  1. Gather as much information as you can about the agency - issues being addressed, mission, purpose, goals, activities of organization, special events, etc. – check out their website and any print materials they have.

  1. Who are you going to be interacting with – get to know them, specifically. They have knowledge that will be helpful to you.

  1. What are you bringing to the experience?

  1. Take a personal inventory.

Collaboration (mutually beneficial relationships)

  1. You are becoming members of new communities – introduction to new environments, cultures, and people.

  1. Work toward a shared vision or common goal by sharing responsibility and accountability for achieving results . . . begins with building trust.

  1. Find ways to enhance each other’s capacities

Reciprocity

  1. Means an exchange . . . a two way cyclical process.

  1. We all have gifts to share, and we all have something to learn from one another – every individual is both a teacher and a learner

  1. Transform our attitude and approach . . . Service WITH, not to!

Implies a process of becoming partners in creating change.

Diversity

  1. Affirmation of human diversity – appreciation of differences – try to adopt a salad bowl mentality vs. a melting pot one.

  1. Strive to become aware of personal stereotypes and biases. This necessitates putting some of our assumptions aside and being open to seeing things from a different point of view.

  1. Need a willingness to learn more about what you don’t know . . . take a risk and find courage to step outside of your personal comfort zone.

  1. We also have lots of commonalities, yet we live in and with different circumstances, so we will have different viewpoints. We shouldn’t force our views on others but be willing to listen and share perspectives with civility

  1. SO . . . go in with an open mind.
