Demonstrates evidence of excellence in Extension programming which may consist of single effort or overall excellence. (Applicant must be 40 years of age or younger with 5 or less years of professional Extension experience.)

A good educator exhibits outstanding organization, leadership, and communication skills. Michelle possesses all these desirable qualities—but she also demonstrates unyielding passion and a remarkable ability to empower families, two qualities that take her out of the good category and into the realm of excellence. As an Extension Educator in Family Life, Michelle has been committed to serving the residents of Polk County over the past four years. She serves as the program coordinator for the Children, Youth, and Families At-Risk (CYFAR) Project implementing Juntos: Together for a Better Education. The Juntos program empowers Latino youth by bringing together parents, youth, school staff and community partners to promote academic success and explore possible paths to higher education.

Through the Juntos CYFAR project, Michelle supports 53 families by coordinating and implementing a 5-week family workshop series and follow-up educational family nights. To ensure the voices of parents are heard, she created Padres Juntos, a parent advisory group to help plan and implement family nights, which allows the Juntos program to better serve all families. Michelle’s bilingual abilities allow her to connect with parents in Spanish and establish trust with families while helping them reach their educational goals. One of the parents in the program shared, “The Juntos program is not just a school program that will help [your children] with [their] grades and school. It will also help you improve your relationships with your children, be a better parent to your children, be better children, and understand how important education is and search for the right path in their lives.” Michelle also serves as an academic coach for youth in the program as well as the leader of two Juntos 4-H Clubs, which focus on college and career readiness. She goes above and beyond to create a college-going culture among youth in the program by providing experiences on college campuses across the state.

Due to the success of the Juntos Program at the initial site, Michelle has grown the Juntos program across the county leading to the graduation of 134 parents and 128 youth in 14 different sites over the past four years. Her success at creating and maintaining partnerships in the community has helped her implement additional Family Life programing. She has coordinated three Strengthening Families programs in both English and Spanish, resulting in the graduation of 30 parents and 32 youth. Last summer, she piloted the Raising School Ready Readers program and looks forward to facilitating three scheduled series in 2019.

Michelle’s commitment to interdisciplinary work is impressive as she frequently collaborates with co-workers across program areas to provide educational experiences. This fall Michelle served on the planning team for the Polk County 4-H RISE College Access Conference at Grandview University, an opportunity for 7th-10th grade underrepresented youth to connect with college students from similar backgrounds, develop their leadership abilities, and explore college and career paths. Not only did she help plan the event, but she also mentored three youth from the Juntos 4-H Club as they participated on the event planning team. One of the youth gave a keynote speech at the conference and shared, “I have stayed this long because [Michelle] has walked me through everything, has given me opportunities to prove myself as a leader, and has stuck by me all this time. She truly cares not only how I am doing academically but also emotionally. The club meetings are always educational and there’s always a different topic.” Michelle is currently the co-chair for the Youth Leadership Committee as part of the planning for the upcoming 4-H multicultural retreat in April.

Michelle is dedicated to sharing Extension and Outreach’s story. She collaborated with Organizational Advancement to create two videos demonstrating the value of the Juntos program in the community. Michelle presented with the Iowa CYFAR team at the 2017 CYFAR Conference in Washington, D.C., and she recently submitted a proposal to present at the 2019 National Urban Extension Conference. She has also shared her experiences regarding engaging the Latino community on various internal webinars as well as at a GEAR UP Conference and Iowa DNR Conference. In addition to sharing her work, she also values being involved in state initiatives such as the Juntos Work Team and the First Thursday Work Team.
