Newbery Medal Winner Susan Patron to Speak

at Santiago Canyon College

September 24—Author Susan Patron, the 2007 John Newbery Medal recipient, will visit Santiago Canyon College on Thursday, October 18, to discuss and sign her award-winning book, The Higher Power of Lucky. This free, public event will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. in building D, room 101. Light refreshments will be served and free parking will be available in all lots. The Higher Power of Lucky will be available for advance purchase in the Santiago Canyon College bookstore and at the October 18 event.

Considered the “Academy Award” for outstanding contribution to American children’s literature, the Newbery Medal is the first and one of the world’s most prestigious children’s book awards. It is bestowed annually by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association.

“We are thrilled that Susan Patron will be visiting the college, and that our students and the community will have the opportunity to meet this nationally acclaimed writer,” said Barbara Sproat, Santiago Canyon College Reference Librarian and resident expert in children’s literature. The event is sponsored by the Santiago Canyon College Friends of the Library.

The Higher Power of Lucky is the story of 10-year-old Lucky Trimble, an aspiring scientist who lives in the fictional California desert town of Hard Pan. Fearing that her legal guardian will abandon her, Lucky decides to run away while she continues seeking a higher power to bring her the stability that she craves.
