Of Mice and Men – Socratic Seminar Preparation

Of Mice and Men – Socratic Seminar Preparation – Group A

To prepare for our discussion tomorrow, write out answers to the questions below. Make sure you include references to the text (you may simply write the page numbers on your paper, or you may want to include short quotes in your responses).

Versions of “The Dream”

1. How does each character speak of hopes and dreams? How does the idea of “the dream” differ for each character? Think of course about Lennie and George, but also about Candy, Curley’s wife, Crooks, and other characters (including Whit).

The Dream” as it reveals theme

2. How and why does the dream change throughout the book? What makes it stronger or weaker?

3. How does the dream help us understand isolation and loneliness versus community and friendship?

4. What does it tell us about issues of class, race, and gender during this time (dehumanization)?

Additional important questions to consider

5. Do you consider the death of Lennie a mercy killing? Why or why not? Was George justified in killing Lennie?

6. There are many examples of irony in the story. What are some of them? What is the major irony in the story?

7. What are some additional universal themes in this novel? (Universal themes are those that people care about universally – they are relevant no matter what the time period or geographic location.)

8. Could the book have ended differently? How? Be realistic when you think about this.

9. Add your own questions that you want to address in the seminar. Think about what you are curious about and what will help foster an engaging discussion. Be sure to think about any parallels that might exist between the themes of the novel and those we may encounter in our real lives every day.
