Explanation of Grants.gov Applicant Type
Changes and Impact to Grants Online

As part of Grants Online Release 2.4, support has been added for applications using Grants.gov’s updated SF-424 form known as “SF-424 v2.0”. The fields on this form are similar to the original SF-424, but there are some key differences. Two significant changes that impact Grants Online involve the list of Applicant Types available to applicants on the form.

  1. Multiple Applicant Type Selections

The new SF-424 form allows an applicant to select up to three distinct Applicant Type values on each application. Grants Online’s Application Details screen has been updated to allow viewing/editing of these additional elements. However, although applicants can now specify multiple applicant types when submitting applications, Grants Online will continue to only allow one Applicant Type value on a Grantee’s Organization record.

  1. Changes to Applicant Type Values

The new SF-424 form introduces numerous additional Applicant Type choices, and several of the original values have been modified to provide more detail. Unfortunately, the alphabetic codes used for these types are completely different from those used on the old version.

To support the new form, and to aide the adoption of additional forms in the future, the Applicant Types list available in Grants Online has been updated to exactly match what is on the new SF-424 form. To support this change:

The table on the following page contains details on how legacy conversions were done. It can also be used as a reference when inputting paper applications using the old SF-424 form.
